Does anyone know how to use the archicad .bak backup files to recover a .dwg file?

My flat mate is trying to recover a project from about a month ago that he since deleted the original files of and has only managed to recover a corrupt version of the original with data recovery tools. (im stumped on all this)

Not sure whether it's the same as AutoCAD 06 or Arch Desktop 07 but used to have to change extension from .bak --> .dwg .
Would recommend creating a copy of the .bak file first tho
