Arconis Backup questions..

I’m trying to set up a backup schedule using Arconis True Image that can be left to its own devices.

I’ve created a monthly fill backup schedule and a daily differential backup schedule.

So I’ve created a full backup as a start and the schedule rightly creates a new differential backup file each day, which is fine. However, one thing that did spring to mind is that there appears to be no rotation. This means that at some point, the number of differential files will just keep growing.

My question is, when does the system rotate? And is there any way of controlling this?

Do the differential backups start all over again at the next full scheduled backup.

If not, I’d have think about performing some kind of manual house keeping (i.e. delete the older differentials) and reset the schedule over again.

Basically, I want to leave the user with absolutely nothing to do.

Am I missing something here?

Im not sure if its changed in the never versions but when acronis true image 8 was the new product an Acronis rep answered in their support forum your question somewhere along the lines of you have to create different jobs so for example you setup a full backup on the 1st every month then you run increments on that, then on the 15th you create another full backup with a different file name and then you can run increments of that.

As I said i'm not sure if its changed in the newer versions or not. At work I have scheduled all server to have a full backup every night saved to our NAS they get overwritten on a weekly basis, the last friday backup every month gets stored on tape and held in a fire safe to allow going back longer than a week.

Hmm not sure if all this wall of text actually answered your question or not...

Basically, i'd like a grandfather, father, son rotation system so previous backups are over writen. I can't expect this user to be setting up backups nor perform housekeeping.

I've just read the following in the manual but it doesn't say anything about setting this up this way:

When the first backup on a schedule is executed, a full backup will be created. If the choice was (2) or (3), the next backup will be incremental (or differential) until the specified number of incremental or differential backups are made, the next time a new full backup and a set of sub sequential incremental (differential) backups will be created; this process will then continue until you decide to change it.

Before you can control the amount of incrimental backups you need to create a backup location, the option to manage backup locations is normaly whithin the "Tools" tab, once the backup location has been created you should get the following when you are creating a scheduled task.

Hope this helps!
