I have reinstalled my cpu heatsink and gpu heatsink with arctic 5 thermal paste and my temps seem to have gone up by 3-4 degrees. I was under the impression that it would help my temps. Does it need to be left for a while to settle before my temps go back down again?

did you ensure that all the excess paste from the previous cooler was removed? is the heatsink seated properly?

Yes, it needs time to settle/bake, helps if you run Prime95 or Orthos to heat up the CPU, you should notice that after a week or so it will settle down. If it doesn't it may be a problem with how you applied it, or the amount of tension from the heatsink.

Sometimes its a case of lapping the heatsink and or cpu to get better contact.

Yeah all of the previous paste was removed properly and the heatsink is seated properly. It is an Arctic 64 Freezer cooler and fits very snuggly in the plastic bracket so as far as I can see it is seated properly and making good contact.

I only applied a very thin layer of paste evenly across the top of the whole chip so I think that should be ok. The heatsink seems to be very tight on the cpu and not moving which is correct.

I will run Orthos for a while to get it heated up a bit and settle it in.

Thanks

Just to update that I have had Orthos running for 30 mins now and the cpu temp hasn't gone above 48 degrees but it idles about 40 degrees

Ok i'm confused. Speedfan is showing my idle cpu temp as 42 degrees but Coretemp is showing the temps for the two seperate cores as 8 degrees and 20 degrees?

Can anyone shed any light as to the massive difference and why one core is showing a LOT hotter than the other? Is Coretemp lying to me?

At those temps yeah. I mean what's your ambient temp probably at least 17°C so no way your CPU is at 20 or less than ambient. I couldn't say why though, I'm afraid.

What cleaning solution did you use to remove the old paste?

I didn't use any solution to remove the old paste. The heatsink had only been on there a few days which was installed from new so the old paste was able to be removed really easily.

Using Hardware Monitor to check the temps now and it is now idling at around 37 degrees which seems to be better.

Thats your issue. Have a look at the AS site it details how to apply the AS5. Spreading it over the cpu is not the way to do it.

Matt

AS5 iirc needs around about 200hours~ to be optimal in which over that time temps should drop by 4~5 degrees

This could be your issue. After removing any heatsink you'll definitely need some IPA or similar to clean it. Even if it looks clean it wont be, trust me. Also, follow the AS5 instructions, which I believe is a very thin line of paste down the chip, at least it was for my dual.

Failing that, you could always lap.

I'm running the freezr A64 with the pre applied paste on my X2 4400 at stock and i get idle temps of around 39/40.

How much should the AS5 bring temps down?

The Freezer will have had MX-2 thermal paste already applied - which is just as good if not better that AS5 - After 200hrs your'll be back at the temps you started with, sorry

Totally agree, always use Greene King IPA to clean your stuff ;) Isopropanol alcohol IPA or this
