The Arctic Monkeys have won this year's Mercury Prize for their album Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not.

The Sheffield-based band, whose album became the fastest-selling debut in the UK in February, were run-away favourites to take the award.

They were up against nominees including Muse, Editors, Thom Yorke, Richard Hawley, The Guillemots, Scritti Politti and Hot Chip.

The £20,000 prize is for the best album of the year by a British or Irish act.

How retarded. The Eraser is better and it's not even that amazing.

How dare you even think of saying "The Eraser" is not amazing, This album is Thom Yorke at his best right here, right now. After all how many musical genius's are left in the "radio 1" msuic society we live in these days?

Please don't patronise me. I know about Thom Yorke, and I know that he is...to put it bluntly, a genius. To me The Eraser is a fairly good album but c'mon it's not masterpiece.

It's rare to find an album these days with a high standard on songs throughout, usually it's only a couple of decent tracks then rubbish.

Congrats.

Why do people always say this? Let me spell it out:

There is PLENTY of good music out there, with amazing albums being released ALL THE TIME, you just need to stop finding out about your albums from the radio, TV and magazines (with a few exceptions), because it's bloody hard to find good music on those mediums. To try and say that in the music world the Arctic Monkeys is right up there with the best releases of this year is frankly an utter joke.

It's not rare to find a good album these days, it's only because people aren't looking, and expect good albums to just be dumped in their laps. Surprise surprise, in the music world, the best albums of the year won't always necessarily be brought to your attention by MTV or NME.

This is one of my pet hates.

Some releases from this year which are miles better than Arctic Monkeys:

Cursive - Happy Hollow
The Mars Volta - Amputechture
The Roots - Game Theory
TV On The Radio - Return To Cookie Mountain
A Lily - Wake:Sleep
Amusement Parks On Fire - Out Of The Angeles
Espers - Espers II
Comets On Fire - Avatar
Khoma - The Second Wave
Russian Circles - Enter
Girl Talk - Night Ripper
Envy - Insomniac Doze
Coldcut - Sound Mirrors
Boris - Pink
Portugal. the Man - Waiter: You Vultures!
Mogwai - Mr. Beast

Need I go on...?

In your opinion. Music is *extremely* subjective, and what one person thinks is a good album is not necessarily what others think.

Yes, but I'm always right.

This is what I class as 'music snobbery' when someone thinks that just because music was brought to your attention via the popular media that it somehow makes it less worthy than music that you have to go looking for. It's one of *my* pet hates.

I don't recall ever saying that.

I'm sure there are better albums that were released in the last year. There are probably ones that even you haven't come across.

Oh my. I didn't read this until now. Basically you're wrong.

there's no such thing as varying degrees of subjectivity. it's either subjective, or it's not.

i'd say that the majority of the people commenting in this thread aren't who any particular awards ceremony would be catering for in the first place.

yesterday i was in a car with 3 other people, and they were talking about the Mercurys...i stated that i hate the arctic monkeys and i believe that they'll contribute nothing worthwhile to music for the long-term, but they love them and thought they thoroughly deserved it. this leads me to believe that we don't have to all like the same thing, and not every prize-winning musical outfit is going to be to your taste. oddly enough

Hah I laugh at your compromise, good nature and lack of argument picking one side. Pfft! Get out of my thread with this kind of positive thinking.

"Artic Monkeys win the Mercury music prize"

Thanks for taking the suspense out of the tv prog tonight. Great.

Oh my, I'm so sorry to spoil it, it really must be edge of your seat stuff to watch!!!!!!!!!

Especially what with it being all the news.

Following their Mercury Prize win on Tuesday night, Arctic Monkeys were almost prevented from partying at the awards' aftershow, as bouncers at the Met Bar weren't convinced that the band were of legal drinking age.

Unable to produce any identification, the winning trio were eventually ushered in by someone who recognised who they were. Poor wee lambs. The band, of course, had to resort to using fake IDs while touring the States to 'prove' that they were over 21.

HAHAHAHAHAHA.

Really?

I rate that as a perfect reason why popularity should matter.

Out of that list I'd probably say The Go! Team should have won it, but the Antony album is far superior to any of the others listed.
