Ive always used Arctic silver on my cpu's/cpu coolers.
And in the past ive always put a thin layer covering fully the top of the CPU. Ive just installed a new motherboard and so reseated the CPU, I was getting temps of about 40 degress overclocking my E6300 to 2.4ghz. spreading the arctic silver 5 over the entire top of the cpu heat spreader.

I then read the instructions on the arctic website about dual core CPU's and saw you are only meant to put a thin line down the centre of the heat spreader.

I cleaned up the CPU and re-applied it using this method.
My temps have now dropped to 25, 30 degress on load :)

Just a quick heads up incase other people where like myself and never looked at the arctic website!.

There no way your going be getting 25c to 30c on load unless you live in a fridge or something.....As must people room temps are normally around 25C

At the moment im getting 25C degrees :p lowest i've had is about 23 or so.

I get 28c idle using Tuniq tower at stock ;) I normally put a small layer on top of the CPU..
I'm using the AF7 Freezer and the paste that came with it, I've got some AS5 on the side though, might put it on when I get my parts on Tuesday.

If it's even worth bothering. :p

In my experience, it made little experience to me when i had my AC7. I still had the same temps as before, maybe eve a degree or two worse. But it was probably because i kept applying it wrong, either too much or too little.

Once i switch to a Noctua U12F i now use MX-1, which is brilliant. No need to worry about it shorting anything out and you can apply more than AS5 without inhibiting performance.

With my ACF7 I didn't notice a change in idle temps but load temps had fallen...
