I was considering a dell laptop, a Studio flavour to be precise.
I'm hearing a lot of chatter including here that there Is a fault
with the "media" buttons on said laptop.
for example when the laptop boots up the sound Is at full whack and cant be turned down, so obviously I dont wish to wake the road up at 1am botting into windows.
Another fault suggests that for no apparent reason the DVD drive ejects on Its own accord at random intervals.

Lets face It, who would want a laptop such as that ?

Does anyone here have a Dell Studio laptop with no Issues?
has It all been blown out of proportion ?

I was going to get the 1900x1200 screen.
do you have that one and if so are you impressed by it?

I've got the 1440x900 screen with the bog standard CCFL blacklight. I would have liked the LED screen but I got if from the outlet so took the first machine with the spec I wanted. I did save over 50% so can't complain ;)

I've ordered a studio 15! hope its alright, I'm sure its no trouble as i've got on-site warranty anyways. Haven't heard much about this problem though!

How common is it?

Bare in mind forums tend to be places where people complain about faults - and the vast majority of users are actually not having any problems and hence, not posting about it on a forum.

Friend has a studio 17 with similar but slightly different issues.

The eject button doesn't work at all, the only way to eject discs is via My Computer. Bit of a chore and not the way it should be on a brand new laptop.

Another issue is the keys require such a light touch to press that just resting your fingers on some is enough to press them, particularly annoying if you accidentally press shift / ctrl or alt.

Studio 15 from the Outlet here and I have the eject button problem (i.e. it continues to eject - normally at boot up)

I simply haven't got around to getting on with support about it yet,

Also got the 1920x1200 screen. Very nice for watching movies but text can be a bit small sometimes. It's a shame IE doesn't remember zoom settings.

This week my Studio 17 started playing up over the course of a few days. The first thing that happend was the keyboard became very sluggish, then the mousepad stopped working, then CPU the fan came on 100% and finally the media buttons stopped working.

I found a thread after some googling where others had similar issues and a quick login to dell support confirmed the problem and I was linked a new BIOS to install (A05). So far so good, all the problems have gone away.

Thanks,
Matt.
