Are Americans Dumb

Most of those are fair enough, but can you really class a supermarket as an invention/discovery?

You think? I'd be querying telephones, televisions, motorcycles and velcro (amongst others probably) as American inventions - for a number of things on the list the inventors weren't American even if some were in America at the time of the invention/patent.

not all americans are dumb, not anymore than anywhere else in the world; however, there are more ignorant people there on a whole than in Europe.

Having lived in the US for over fifteen years, I have met/heard some really stupid remarks on countless ocasions, but it's more a result of ignorance rather than being stupid. Lots in the US think the US is the best place in the world and look no further (or not even interested). Not saying that it is or isn't (good and bad everywhere I think) but it is more to explain why they may be so self centered and blind to a lot of other realities, which may make them look dumb sometimes.

Definately.

Of my two experiences of the US I came back with 2 different opinions...

First time to the western side we had some hick yelling at us (british people) for voting Obama in...

Second time I worked with a variety of college students and youngish people (all 20-30) in the east and they were perfectly smart, in fact a few of them had spent periods studying abroad etc.

So yeah you have the idiots and the normal people. Older and "less" educated people, just like in this country can be very dim (think chavs), younger/more liveral/educated can be very intelligent.

I'd also question radio, lightbulbs and aeroplanes tbh...

EDIT: Actually I would suggest for a fact they aren't American inventions.

Lightbulbs and aeroplanes are fiddly, as it was Americans who made the first truly successful ones, though others had gone before.

Radio is definitely not theirs though. I thought of Italian Marconi, and Wikipedia says that his work was based on a German scientists research.

Well the first self powered flight was done by a brit about 50 years before, and there were other powered flights done before that so America can only claim the first sustained self powered flight. Edison created a commercially successful lightbulb, not the first lightbulb. That to me is not fiddly in the slightest.:p But yeah, I know what you mean.

So what we're saying is that the list is slightly dubious then? Americans have done lots of great things, there's really little need to attribute to them things they haven't done.

I think part of the problem is that things like this come from international research, with constant refinements. Now where does the first of something come from if bits were taken from others research with successive builds... :p

Some of the most amazing things are initiated out of the US, they have NASA and MIT for starters. Yes, there is a dependency on international talent but that's true of anywhere.

Some of my favourite film directors/actors are Americans, and the same goes for authors and bands/performers too.

They also have cool aircraft and spooky secret bases :)

The OP has posted an entire thread which appears to only serve the purpose of attempting to wind somebody up. He is implying that an entire nation of 160 million people are 'dumb'.

I thought he implied the `average` american was dumb not all.

Saying George Bush isn't dumb is a bit of a joke though. Seriously

Those militaristic idiot Americans who invented the internet are pretty stupid.

Some idiotic useless American inventions/discoveries I NEVER use:

Airplanes
Electricity
Telephones
"Cellphones"
LEDs
Various stupid vaccines and medicines that probly don't even work
GPS
Credit cards
Google
Lightbulbs
Nuclear power stations
TV
Microwave cooking
Refrigeration
Digital cameras
Ethernet networks
Motorbikes
Zips
Velcro
Supermarkets
Barcodes
Digital computers
Microprocessors
Radio
Carbon fibre
CDs

And yet I still wouldn't trust them to make any of those things! :p
