Are Apple going backwards?

Maybe its Becuase I'm on old hardware iphone4 and ipad2, but found every update has made things crash more and more. And ios7 has just been a nightmare for this, its taken a massive hit in reliability. Safari and mail app just crash do often now.

Nah, its not old hardware. iMessage on IP5 with ios7 is a bag of spoons. It used to work all the time, now randomly will not send even though I have 3G signal and/or Wifi - it still chooses to send as SMS.
Either that or it will send a message from one of my email addresses like icloud.com or me.com instead of my number (dispite having my number set in imessage start new convo settings)

Can't say email crashes for me - I use hotmail only though

They're not going backwards, they're slowing down. Because it is harder to be 'revolutionary' in the computer/computerised technology industry these days.

What an odd statement. Can you name me an Android device from 2010 that's still getting official updates? Has Google released a KitKat update for the Nexus One for example?

It's not an odd statement at all, it's probably just the case that there aren't enough Nexus One users out there to make it worth updating.

If I remember right it was a complete sales flop.

and people who go on hols and want don't want to take their £600 phone to the beach?

Buy a case.

You do realise the iPod preceded the iPhone, yes?

And you may now be asking why they keep selling it (now that they have the iPhone). Well if they didn't sell they wouldn't produce it. Just because you don't get it, doesn't mean other people don't either. Furthermore they are the best music players for some people but maybe not the best phone... The iPod allows them to have the best of both by investing in a different phone.

There were smartphones out before the iPhone and they played music just fine.

Yes they sell really well, my niece wants one because all her friends have one. Her phone plays music just fine and is much easier to add music to but she still wants one.

When I told her about iTunes she changed her mind.

I doubt lack of sales had to do with anything, just look at how the HTC Desire fared :p

You don't even need to use iTunes with iOS devices these days, if you so wish - music or not.

IP5 bulky?

Then you have another thread of people complaining it's not big enough as a phone.

iOS7 is like kids toy?

You have another thread of people complaining the old icons looks like kids toy and new one is more sleeker.

You can't win.

with 75 billion in the bank why can't we choose which icons we want?

Apple will start to slide downhill at some point. It's inevitable and I doubt any serious person would disagree with me. Some might even say it's already begun.

Don't care, it's Apple.

They would have to release something revolutionary to get me using their heavily restricted devices.

Never bought at Apple product, never given them a penny.
some people don't mind paying 99c for apps :o

Indeed but dont put software like 'trans copy manager' on your computer for the love of god!

I have just spent 15 minutes formatting and restoring my OS drive because of it... massive CPU usage all the time, + 15 processes after install  and some random .exe running that looks like some kind of virus...

In short, iTunes is perfectly fine. Yes, its bloated but it works, looks nice, is fast and is easy to use

I have all the Final Fantasy games available on Android and there around £10 each, I've bought loads of games and apps on the Play Store. :D

Sorry but not all Android users fit into the stereotype of the stingy users who only download free apps.

Google have publicly stated they only support their devices for 18 months, which is a bit crap.

Big deal, I havent used an official rom on my Android device since I bought it so I don't really care.

Besides they said "falls outside of the 18-month update window when Google and others traditionally update devices", that's not the same as they won't update after 18 months, if a device is popular enough and there is enough demand they will update them.

The Galaxy Nexus was another fail device which wasn't very popular so better they draw a line and move on with regards to that phone.

So which Android phone has received 3+ years of updates?

It's a bit ridiculous to say that Android runs better on older phones when older Android phones don't get updates.

i had a nexus 4 for personal use. at the same time i got a samsung note 2 for work. few weeks ago i bought a nexus 5, i must say i really dont like what they did to kitkat (4.4)....

when i got the nexus 5, i also bought a ipad mini with retina display to replace my nexus 7. i left iOS for a couple of years. now going back to iOS with the new ipad mini, im reminded how i like the simplicity of it. it just didnt feel like it is trying to hard to cater for everything, it just does simple things and does it perfectly.

but i must say i do prefer the older iOS look.

EDIT: having said all that, might just be im getting old and doesnt adapt well to newer features, lol :D

Not really, they are two different issues.

You can get CyanogenMod with 4.4 for the Galaxy S as well as a few other old devices.

So yes they do get updates unofficially. :D

It's not that different, the visual changes are down to the new launcher and Google Now swipe to left which should be disabled because it's useless.

Use Nova launcher, change visual style to Jelly Bean and your done. I quite like the new visuals but not the performance, the launcher lags and transition animations judder.

I don't understand how 3rd party apps do a better job with launchers than Google.

For the most part I'm hardware and software agnostic - I run Windows, OSX and Linux (several variants), I've run Samsung, Motorola, HTC and Apple smartphones with iOS and Android. I even switch between consoles!

Personally I find it hard to fault Apple's hardware, although comparing it to anything other than the top-end competitor in each field is just plain unfair... Apple doesn't try to compete at those price points, so we have no idea whether they would be better/worse.

For phones:
Generally I find Apple and the top end HTC phones to be comparable in hardware, whereas Samsungs feel a little cheap to me.

Personally I find Android to be "not quite there" - it's a little clunkier and less well thought out, and the Market/Play Store is so full of crap it's unbelievable. Windows phone is much nicer, although needs a little more maturing. iOS has its issues, and is sometimes not as configurable as I'd like, but IMO it does what you want from a smartphone perfectly.

PCs/Laptops:
Apple hardware for their laptops is superb. I'd never buy a Windows laptop again, I just find they're not as well thought out and don't last. On the flip side, I'd never buy an Apple desktop - with no advantages to battery life or build quality for a machine that sits on/under a desk, I don't see the need.

OSX vs Windows? Who cares. Even more than Android vs iOS or the hardware, I find the desktop OS's to be the closest of all. I can quite happily switch between the two and virtually never miss anything in either. The "Not called Metro any more" start menu is crap, however.

Overall I think the tech market has stagnated in many ways. Desktop OS's have converged on a point where they do what we need them to and are plenty fast enough for normal needs. Similarly so has the hardware for most uses. I think people have been spoiled in the last 5 years or so by the smartphone market suddenly exploding with innovation and development... but I think that, too, has hit a point where growth and change will slow down as we actually find our needs are being met.

Other than increased battery life and faster response times, what does anyone actually want from their PC/Phone nowadays? Better build quality?

I agree with everything you said apart from this, for me the user experience you get with OSX is a big selling point for Apple laptops along with the hardware/build quality as you said. In my job I sit at a Windows 7 laptop for hours on end and it's not even funny the number of times Explorer crashes, or something goes wrong necessitating a reboot. Or the number of times an application goes into "Not Responding" state. I know OSX can get the spinning beach ball of death from time to time but in comparison it's nothing really.

Most sensible post here I've seen!

I too uses win 7 at work all day, no problem getting around it, OSX at home, because I like it and i can claim it under my business so price is less of a concern for me. Plus, when you have lots of apple stuff, they do magically just talk to each other soon as you sign in your apple ID. I must be getting old coz I have no interest as to why it does that, I am just glad it does.

My 2010 Mac Pro at work has a grand old time of apps crashing, namely Xcode and Source Tree, sometimes others.

Could be a hardware fault (impressive seeing as it has ECC registered RAM) but hey, my MacBook Pro has always been a lot more stable.

Don't even get me started on Windows :p The ClearType font hinting is bad enough!

tbh Windows has been flawless since W7. My Mavericks 2013 MBA freezes in apps as frequently as my Win8 machine does, i.e. very rarely. Mav is probably simpler to navigate, but W8 is a much more "complete" OS (by powerful i mean has much more variety of apps, lots of different ways of doing the same thing, can be tweaked to fix any issues all imo of course).

My MBA has a bootcamp w8 partition, but i only use it for games and serious work (the MS Office for OS X is shocking...)

One example of complete fail on Apples part:

I have Zeppelin airs, iphones, ipads and airport expresses in our house. On of the airport express's is an 802.11g device.

Out of my MBA, iOS devices and PC only the PC can communicate with it (Airport Untility) as all of the apple devices say the hardware is too old for the software, yet my PC version of Airport Utility communicates with, and updates tit with no issue; how stupid!
