Are ATi finally turning a corner?

I've had ATi cards in the past and had a few niggly problems, but I hear a lot of good things nowadays about how the cards are top notch for the money.

But, my main point is have AMD managed to start supporting these cards with drivers properly? From my previous experience its been mostly the drivers that have caused my issues and I always swore I'd take the green route when I bought my new system, but its now very tempting to go ATi again. Any opinions on recent support from AMD?

Thanks

ive never really had a issue [been a user since 5 series] ATI for the foreseeable future for me

both amd (5850, 5870, 6950, 6970, and the soon to come 6990) and nvidia cards (all gtx5xx series) are awesome, and both have professional-grade drivers. When deciding what card to get first consider what budget you have, what you plan on doing with the card and how long you want to keep the card and get the best performing one that matches you above criteria regardless if it's amd or nvidia

I've gone HD2900 - HD3870 - HD4870 - HD4870 Crossfire - HD5870 and I've never experienced any problems with drivers. I would have no problem recommending AMD to anyone, if the card was better than nVidia's option in that price bracket.

Never really had problems with drivers for either brand. Just pick whatever is the best bang for buck in my price range at the time.

I had a 5870 for a while and I gotta admit the thing was a beast. The only thing that made me sell it was that it couldn't handle 120hz as good as my old nvidia card, hence the reason going back to nvidia. If they were able to support 120hz without all the screen flickering and stuttering I'd go back to ATI without a doubt.

Never had an issue with either company's drivers (besides Nvidia not allowing SLI with a Xeon, unless an Nvidia chipset is present...). Went 4850 -> 4890 -> 5850 -> 8800GT -> GTX470 -> aborted SLI -> GTX480 -> SLI -> 6950 (coming tomorrow).

only had problem with early drivers when i had 3870 crossfire, since then stuck with single card solution no problems with drivers at all.

had 4870 , now have 6970

also had 260 , and 8800gts g92 didnt have any problems at green side to

I'm getting display driver crashes roughly once a week (youtube triggered them as well, until i disabled hardware acceleration in flash), whereas my 8800GTX was rock solid. I also had to set up ATI tray tools to keep the memory at full frequency in 2d mode, to prevent my monitor flickering every few seconds.
In games it's usually fine though, Dragon Age will occasionally glitch but that's it.

On the plus side it scales 640x480 correctly on my 16:10 screen, my nvidia card messed this up and cut quite a lot of information off, I had to use a different screen if I wanted to do anything in BIOS or DOS.

I had issues with the early crossfire drivers for my 5850s, (early 10 cats) nothing insurmountable but still annoying, singe card seemed fine, I stopped using them a while ago though so couldn't comment on them now with any level of accuracy.

Had issues with drivers in the past (9800xt). I then moved to nvidia with an 8800gt and GTX480 then recently had got a 4850 as a replacement for my 8800gt machine, had nothing but troubles again with the drivers, I don't know if its a voodoo thing with me and ATI as people say they have improved, but for me, just too many niggles. I've managed to fix it to a point now, but occasionally still get issues.

Can't recommend them, i'll not be purchasing an AMD/ATI card for the foreseeable future again, Nvidia are just far better based on my own experiences and whilst I seem to pay more for the Nvidia card at the time, it's worth it purely for ease of use and performance.

What were your problems on the two ATI cards?.

I've ran dual screens with ATI with no problem when I had my 22" LCD. I've had the 9800Pro, X800XT PE, X1900XT, 2900Pro, 4870 and now 6950. Also had the 7600GT and 8800GTX. No driver problems with either company apart from having to update older sets of drivers for newer games as I didn't use to update right away. Even when I do update right away, I don't have problems with Nvidia or ATI.

I can say nothing negative with either company yet I see all these problems reported by others that I can never seem to replicate with various hardware combinations. It's just confusing to read, especially with all the computers I set up for friends and family as they also have zero problems. Baffles me .

I've recently bought a 5850 after years of Nvidia (9600GT, 7900GTX) and its a superb card for the money.

As far as the drivers go, AMD seem to need a little individual tweaking to get the performance just right, whereas Nvidia drivers were great on install. I recently replaced AMD's CCC with the Tray Tools program and I find that works much better.

The 4890 / 5850 that I had were great, but the GTX 570 is better that the 6900 series, the drivers are a lot better too, AMD/ATI drivers aren't as good as they used to be - Catalyst 10.4 were my last best ones.

Hopefully when the 7*** series of cards come come out they will be faster cards and sorted their drivers out.
