Currently with plusnet on a 10gb a month allowance where i've never seen the speed go above 256kb/s.

Did a line check with BT and it showed that the line could handle 5mb/s but would most probably be ate 3mb/s, and found a nice cheap unlimited package with them.

I just dont understand WHY I have to pay the same as people getting 20mb/s

Anyone in rural areas notice a speed increase when changed to BT?

according to BT's terms they state that the minimum service speed they garantee is 256kbs sync rate below that they class it as fault breach.

Best thing to do is always make sure your connected into the test socket with new filter and ensure your phone line doesn't have any distortion on it as that will hinder a stable signal being sent down the line.

Once you do have a good sync on your router try not to reboot or power on and off the router for at least 3 days.

Also you should complete the following test http://speedtester.bt.com and post back your full results.

A lot depends on how far you are away from the exchange my connection with BT never went above 3mb - however after numerous calls to BT to fix it and they kept fobbing me off saying they will fix it but never did. So ended contract early and moved to Sky. Our connection has improved to 5mb and half the cost too. We are on a new estate on the outskirts of the town. Our line attentuation is around 56db so wont get more than 5.

Best thing to do is check your asdsl line stats and run one of online line speed checkers. it will tell you what you may expect.

Your sig is too big by the way. Is that a speed test of your current connection?

I've always sworn by BT, nice stable connection, good pings at all times. I have it at my house and my mum has it at hers. She lives about 4-5km from the exchange, on a very ropey looking line. Still manages a 1024kb connection

I live in the sticks at the moment, have done quite a bit of work around the house to try and get the best connection! Removed ring wires from sockets and the router is connected to the main socket. Can you post your exchange from sam knows? Will be a bit easier to see what is available in regards to LLU as bt wholesale is depressing!

Your speed is either being throttled by your ISP or you have a broadband issue going on there, or perhaps the speedtest server you used was slow.

Ever since Max ADSL came around ISPs have always offered an 'Up to' type service with a flat cost rate for every user. It's just the way things are. It's not the ISPs fault that you live a long way from the exchange. It would be a total nightmare for ISPs to offer different pricing structures based on your individual distances from the exchange and could be unfair to those lucky enough to live closer and able to get 20Mbit or more and not actually need the speed.
