Are Deltas really *that* loud?

I'm in the market for a couple of (80mm?) case fans to fit to the grills. I'm not terribly au fait with fans (haven't ever bought an aftermarket one), but I do remember a few years ago Delta fans got a lot of press on these boards.

My primary concern is getting something that has a lot of cooling power and I have never been all that bothered about noise levels. However it's all relative and I think the noisiest thing I've had to date is the fan on my Leadtek 6800GT.

What I need to know, is whether the reputation for Deltas being unbearably loud is justified, or is it just another form of techie snobbery where any kind of loud hum eminating from your computer is frowned upon?

On a related note I suppose, are there any cheap alternatives which shift a lot of air?

Sit next to one of those little scooter things that annoying 16 year olds ride and get them to rev the nuts off it, that is like the 60mm Delta i had.

A serious post now though.

Yes they're loud, very very very very very very very loud. You wont be able to hear anything else in your PC. They surpass any noise you will ever have heard from something so small.

And its a strange kind off loud, not a plaesent roar that a powerfull car might make but a whine. I might get it out later and record it at top speed then email you the file.

They are very loud if they are on full tilt - very loud indeed.

If you have them on a fan controller, they can be as quiet as normal fans if running at low speeds - only thing is you'll lose airflow and you may as well have bought an Amber or something else.

I had one full tilt on one of my rigs in the bedroom 24/7 for a while and I had no trouble sleeping through it (but then, I can sleep in a helicopter going offshore :o ).

Stan :)

Lets put it this way:

Ive got 5HDs, 3x 140mm 62CFM Yate Loons, 3x 120mm 45CFM Yates, and a 92mm Yate in my pc.

My single FFB1212EHB is.. oh I'd say easily 3 times as loud as my entire PC. And thats @ 5v. @12v, I can hear it from outside my flat's door. When its shut.

I think everyone shoudl have one btw, hook it up to a zalman fanmate or other potie fan controller and you can simulate an air siren for those national holidays when youre all getting wasted... :p

I cant believe how loud that video is, I might get one just for the crack.

Ditto, I've had loud fans in the past, but those are ridiculous. The 120mm versions must be pushing some serious air.

TBH From the sound of stevens video, the bearings sound... ermm... Non Existant ? :p
I dont think they put much effort into the bearings mate, considering you cant even hear them once the fan itself is at full tilt lol.

190 CFM, according to OcUK website. None of this weedy 30CFM lark that a lot of the fans seem to have!

In light of the noise and fact that i'd need a 4->3pin adapter, I think I'm going to find an alternative. Shame the YStech 3pin fans are out of stock.
