Are DVD recorders still like this?

Hi guys,

A family friend wants to get a DVD recorder and was hoping to record off of the tv and watch their recordings in other rooms in the house, using different players etc – maybe even on a pc. I can't quite remember exactly what they said, but you get the idea :)

Anyway, I'm posting for some current advice on the matter, because I know for a fact that with our Panasonic recorder, you can only watch what you've recorded on that particular player – we've tried others but they can't read the discs. It's about 5 years old.

So, has anything changed since, and if so, what should I tell them to be looking for?

Cheers,

SW.

You need to finalise the disc in order to play in a regular player, or you are using RAM discs in the Panasonic that are not that well supported by players.

Thanks mate! I really should read instructions manuals a bit more :p

When I bought my recorder I just assumed that what I recorded would only play on that particular unit... I gave on it as soon as I got Sky+ and haven't used it as a recorder since - I might start using it again now that you've wised me up on that 'disc finalising' thing ;)

So I take all recorders are like this, and there's nothing in particular that they should be looking for?

Once my Discs are Finalised I can even watch em on my PC upstairs!... I've even got RAM capability on my PC too!!.. but you don't finalise those discs!!...

I've 3 RAM and 7 +RW discs.. all work in other players (with RAM Computability!!).. My Recorder is a JVC (cost £180 about 2 years ago!!)

On the subject of RAM discs, I thought they were supposed to be far more robust and you could record over them many more times than dvd rw. In my experience though I've found these to start to still give errors after maybe 10 or 20 wipings. Was this just a bad batch, what do other people get out of these?

Not had a Problem with my RAM's.. They're Maxell ones (pack of 3) and I've used em over and over again over the past 2 years!.. I prefer them to RW's as I don't need to wipe them all the time!.. I just 'Delete' the program I want too, and record over the 'Tagged' blank space!.. Plus you can 'Chase Record' like Sky+ with RAM discs!.. you can't do that with R's or RW's..
