Righty , just wanted to make sure that was all ... as i wanted to ask something but now i wont :D

I do find it a bit peculiar though, as PC gamer this month has a huge article on emulators etc and how to get them working

^ thats where i've wanted to ask my q's from ... but since its ban then nooo way :P i love ocuk 2 much

I've had posts deleted when I've talked about it so I'd guess it's not approved of.

Understandable, I guess, but a bit of a shame.

Emulators that don't include copyrighted code (such as bios etc) are perfectly legal... game images on the other hand, are a far greyer area :P

I think emulator talk is ok, but not ROM talk. Although it's often difficult to talk about one without the other.

There is actually nothing wrong with emulators - they are legal. Its the roms and other required files that are not. I think such posts are locked due to talk always leading to roms etc.

Yeah even emulators where you can use the original discs like playstation or amiga emulators require illegal roms because they normally need a BIOS image. I think it's technically legal if you own the console and you rip the bios image yourself. But let's face it, no one is going to do that.

A lot of the older system emulators don't require BIOS images, even newer things like the Game Boy Advance emulators don't need them.

no but they require the roms to play lol.

its a huge grey area, with many aspects that do break the law. its this reason that we cant talk about it here. its far easier to blanket ban emulator talk than it is to specifiy what we can talk about, what we cant and in what context:)

As said, Emulators and ROMs go hand in hand, and it soon becomes a moderators' nightmare. I personally dont blame them. I expect this thread to die pretty sharpish also ;)

not really. I could talk about settings on DOSbox and how to run a particular game. A while ago I was trying to get a few games working on dosbox to play decently and I couldnt find much help on getting them to run right.

These were mainly build engine games such as blood and shawow warrior. No the lfs sound and other tricks dont work well that were posted on some sites.

I have blood and cryptic passage here and would love to play it some how, ive tried using dosbox emulator and it doesnt work well.

The only good way to play it is on my mates crappy old computer downstairs

You could be using roms you programmed yourself though. And in the uk you are legally allowed to make a backup copy of software you own.

I think its here where it gets tricky with roms. Most people wont own the jamma boards to arcade machines but still talk about them emulating arcades

As long as an emulator doesnt use roms i dont see why it cant be discussed

I would love a link to somewhere that says in black and white that under UK law you can do that (though I won't hold my breath), and even then, you are breaking the law by bypassing copy protection to make such an image (though not in all cases).

It's too much of a gray area, and thusly OcUK can't risk allowing discussion of it. It's the same with console modification.

End of really.
