Lo all,

Following on fro my last thread about thinking I'd lost my domain name, I signed up to a years hosting with TSOHost with the intention of transferring the domain from Freezone to TSOHost.

They sent me an e-mail regarding the transfer said that I should ensure the domain was unlocked for transfer and this has caused me some concern. When I do a whois on the domain it says it's currently locked.

I was previously with Freezone.co.uk and so I contacted them to see if they could unlock it for me.

They say that the domain needs to be renewed before they can transfer it to TSOHost and want to charge me £10.50 to do it.

This is the first time I've been in this situation and I'm trying to work out if they are taking me for a ride or not.

Can anyone shed some light on this so I can work out what to do.

Do I just have to stump up the cash? a year with TSOHost + the £10.50 is still going to be cheaper than the renewal costs Freezone wanted to hit me with but it's still a bit of a pain. I've had nothing but trouble with Freezone since I started with them.

Cheers for any help guys.

*Edit* Just had the worlds fastest reply from TSOHost support - basically I've got no choice but to cough up the £10.50 because it seems only Freezone have control over the domain.

I'm a bit peeved but I see it as £10 to finally be rid of them.

My domain name has just expired. Can my registrar require me to pay for a renewal before I can transfer to a new registrar?

No. Your new registrar of choice can initiate a transfer request on an expired domain name once they receive the required authorization from you. Expiration or nonrenewal of a domain name is not a valid reason for denial of a transfer request.

Note that if the registrar has already begun the deletion process on the domain name and its status shows it to be within a 30-day Redemption Grace Period, the name must be .restored. by your current registrar before it can be transferred.

You can't get much more official than iCANN so unless it's begun the deletion process you should be fine :).

Well I've just spoken to them and they say that the quote is only applicable to the new registra, not the old one. Therefor they would still have to renew it before they could transfer it.

I'm starting to wonder if I can contact eNom direct and get them to take the lock off...

Has anyone done this?

*Edit* It seems to get access to eNom control you have to register as a domain reseller, the cheapest option of which is $195 which makes the £10.50 seem almost reasonable!

I would also recommend media temple for this same reason they are aamazing.

This what my current workplace used. They had a 24hr support turn around time and you could definately tell the hosting was outside the uk. Decided to switch a load of our sites to tsohost.

Not the most useful contribution to the thread but thanks for posting.

I've just been speaking to them again and they've somehow conjured up an additional £10 transfer fee on top of the domain renewal.

Quite frankly I've had enough and I told them so.

The only saving grace is that even with these ridiculous fees and the TSOHost costs, it's still going to be cheaper than if I was to carry on with Freezone for another year.
