In terms of themes and graphics: dark themes, gore, more violence, more concerned with evil than good etc.?

It seems to be a trend with recent games that they are gradually getting darker than say the games of the early 00s and before. Am I imagining this, what do you think?

I think it's just that the games industry has matured along with the first generation gamers (Atari 2400 era et.al) to be honest a shift to more mature themes was bound to happen.

Any examples? I would honestly say that some things seem to have levelled out again actually, in some terms anyway.

Don't see many games that can compete with the likes of Postal 1/2 or Manhunt in terms of violence and gore...

I think it's more just because there are less independent developers out there and so less creativity, they've all been took over by big publishers who want them to shovel out the same unimaginitive **** year after year for a steady profit (ie. fps games).

Themes of films, games and literature are believed to mirror social mood at the time of creation. The current economical climate, and before that the culture of fear resulting from a new wave of terrorism, has led to a much darker ambience in media.

Perhaps a bit, more so with movies though there's loads of films now about apocalyptic events and the end of the world.

Not really, got any examples of 'non' dark themed games from the early 00's?

That were good or fun to play :)

Really? Are you aware of games on the market? Are you sure you are simply not looking at the games you are hyped for?

Much more 'light' games than dark games.

EDIT: Limbo, dark, twisted and gory, but at the same time, brilliant, not violent and simply amazing. Once in a life time a game like that will come along.
