Are headphone amps any good?

The general consensus is yes. But beneath that there has to be a level of understanding on your part about making a suitable match. For example, there's very little point buying an amp if you're still working off the freebie iPod headphones.

Others here will make specific recommendations if you give the make and model of your current headphones along with some details about the quality of the audio files you are listening to and a budget. Without a budget from you then any effort spent in recommending products is wasted.

In the meantime you should probably have a look at a site such as Head-Fi. It's dedicated to all things 'can whether portable or home rig based.

What ohm is the DT770?

Also it's a portable DAC/AMP you want not a portable amp as you will be double amping which can cause issues by just buying a portable amp.

So look at portable DAC/AMP's at that budget though all you will be able to afford that is any good will be a Fiio DAC/AMP.

IMO you would be better off selling the ipod and getting a FiiO X5 or a iBasso DX90.

Ipods aren't designed to be used from the ground up with power hungry headphones, they are developed for the masses with their crappy in ears. I would go with the IBasso DX90 and forget buying a seperate DAC/AMP to use with the ipod.

Or if you really do want to go down that route then sell the ipod and buy a Fiio E17 or E18 to use with your smartphone (I assume you own a half decent smartphone).

basically sell the ipod and buy a dedicated decent powerful player or buy a dac/amp for your smartphone.
