Are Microsoft working on the Xbox 3 ?

Just wondering if MS have started to work on the new Xbox, I presume it will get 2009-2010 release, the 360 has done well but its reliability issue have let it down.
2009 to 2010?

Sorry, 2008 is just around the corner and for 2010, that is just 2 years left and it is not going to happen!

The next gen market (current gen if you like!) is barely settled down since only 12 millions 360 and 5 millions PS3 have been sold, there is still a massive remaining slice of market left to be taken. (PS2 (100+ millions!), GC and original xbox owners and new gamers as well)

Once it sells more over the next year or two, it will be much cheaper console to buy = more people buying it + games, that is when you start developing on the next gen console!

This thread is madness!

^The R&D just doesnt happen over night it takes years upon years so I say its quite possible they already have something up their sleeves and 2010 is quite possible for a new Xbox.

By then the 360 will be 5 years old! and DVD9 will start holding back developers so it will have to happen sooner or later.

Did I mention it will take 1 or 2 years? xbox 360 only came out in December 2005 (nearly 2 years now).

R&D can take maybe 1-2 years, they don't take much longer than that otherwise it would an ancient technology!

Like already said, M$ came in late with the Xbox, and suffered for it. I was PS2 fan, had it for years, always done me fine.

This time round M$ got in their 1st, they saw their mistake, but at a cost of reliability issues, which in the end, they've paid for. Again a mistake made, and a mistake corrected.

I'd have no hesitations in buying the next Xbox after my 360. I'm delighted with it, it does everything it should do, i think a lot of people will feel the same, and Gates wont allow all those people to go back to Sony, not after all thats happened. Nest time round, the rush to get the console will be greater, the brand stronger and expanded, basically the same kind of loyalty PS3 received on launch.

I'm not going to pretend I know what process each company goes through to make their consoles, but its safe to say MS has already begun their next project, which is why I believe 2010 is quite possible for another Xbox to be released.

The original Xbox was released in 2001 and only 4 years later we had the 360 in 2005, so why is 2010 too early for the next Xbox?

11 million sales though isnt a lot for the amount of time its been on the shelves. Not when MS said they wanted 10 million sold by last xmas wasn't it?

They wont be that much further than that after this xmas.

Surely even they must be surprised that even halo didnt manage to shift them many consoles despite being the only game i've seen on the tv on the news and also mentioned a lot on the radio.

personally i think MS are here to stay for consoles.

I think there going to sit back on there lot now for the next 3/4 years and rake in the cash from the game sales. think how much halo3 must have made them ? few more bad boys like that over the next few years maybe.

me surely make money on the hardware peripherals and a decent amount too i would imagine.

60 quid for a usb dongle any1?

I'm sure I read somewhere that Halo3 was responsible for a massive surge of consoles.

Monthly records show that the XBox360 is outselling its rival (at least until the price drop) so I don't think Microsoft will be too concerned.

PS2: Released in Japan 4th March 2000.
PS3: Released in Japan 11th November 2006.

Difference: Six and a half years, not two.

a lot of people don't even realise that MS still haven't made 1$/£ out of their console venture. I think that'll change though throughout Xbox360's lifespan, but just a thought to consider.

Its getting less and less important with the "age" of the technology - not only because bloatware similar to Windows doesnt have to run underneath but also with basically with identical hardware (ok + or - a hdd) devs can streamline everything knowing X & Y and Z are all present and will give you a, b and C in "capacity".

By the next release (who ever does it) its likely to have multicore cpu's (possibly SPU's and cpu combination) and potentially multi gpu's also.

Would be a huge mistake by MS to design their own cpu imo (even though Ive read same rumour) simply because they already have assembly/design issues with the X360 - why complicate matters by designing a significant part of the console which might well throw up significantly more problems?

I admire them for trying - but its not even their core know how, love them or loathe them they are software kings and now reasonable assemblers/packagers (in regards to their other hardware, which is mainly or wholly based on other people's parts with MS branding)

Im not trying to incite an arguement, but its understandable Sony designing their Cell (with Tosh/IBM help) simply because they have always been hardware giants, with a lot of their gear containing proprietary Sony IP (for good or bad)

I also think that there will be another cycle of consoles - maybe with a completely unexpected winner (who would have guessed the wii undoubtedly winning the early-mid bouts of this round?)

Because it didn't fare well against PS2 and Microsoft did it early in order to jump start the next gen console race, in hope to steal most of the market away from Sony.

Edit: Microsoft knew if Sony were to release PS3 before them then they have no chance to complete with Sony in PS2 stronghold market.
