Are Microsoft working on the Xbox 3 ?

Right well I skimmed through most of the crap in this thread.

Back to the topic of the next gen Xbox. It's going to happen. Games are great and all but that's not what the 360 is all about.

IPTV
HD DVD
On Demand Content
Media Streaming

The 360 allows you (excluding IPTV) to do these things. It also looks like people are actually using them. People have the choice to buy the HD DVD player so if they are selling then people are using them. Video MP in the US is doing excellent and I'm going to take a massive guess that it will do well in Europe.

MS have control over how people view media in their homes. I think a big part of this is from Media Centre and the 360. MS would be foolish to not continue to invade your homes.

Not necessarily with the X360 though - a number of people are using them with HTPC's etc, maybe this makes little difference to MS - just something to consider:)

I wonder how much longer these companies will pour money into hardware development though. An article on the BBC last week suggested that EA see the future in an open platform (what do they think a PC is?) and a more net based gaming platform - perhaps this is why MS run the live service at a loss?
I work for a software company that many moons ago also made hardware. We moved away from that market, supporting more widely available systems - letting Sun and HP et al spend the money on the development of hardware and OS.

Just like your HDMI spiel ;)

I still maintain that there are different qualitied of HDMI cable. Which is why the cheap and nasty ones stop working far easier than quality cables such as QED.

There's also reasons as to why QED and others, such as Black Rhodium or these are so expensive for shorter lengths.

Well MS have just posted their highest first quarter profits since 1999 with 27% revenue gowth. http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/071025/aqth132.html?.v=17

Overall the Entertainment and Devices Division (Zune/360 etc) posted revenue of $1,929 million and an income (yes an income) of $165m.

They're also claming 1.8m 360s were sold in the quarter which means 13.4 million have been sold 'to retail' to date.

Make of this what you will.

I have always said this also - but been shouted down too many times to mention it any longer :)

Cant remember what site, but it was a gaming specific one - mentioned that upto 1st Oct 8.9m X360's had actually been sold (not shipped) compared to 9m wii's (worldwide of course)

I wish all companies would come clean and actually advertise "installed" systems rather than shipped ones - but guess they are dramatically different

MS make a big loss on Live. Despite the charges, it costs them many times more.

Have they started on the Xbox 3? Yes, probably before the 360 even launched. Its the way things go.

What costs them so much as they have no dedicated servers for games, only for file downloads.

I have no doubt that all the Live fees are pooled together a minimal amount is spent on file servers for downloading demos and the rest of it is paid to content owners to get stuff on video marketplace (Tv shows, films etc), I am sure these deals are not cheap. (wouldn't surprise me if we were subsidising the US video marketplace tbh).

(cynical I know, but I have seen no hard facts to suggest otherwise :D).

There r making a new 360 console with blu ray for games in the near future but as for a new console we wait and see.

No, the servers might not be used for games, but they must have a lot of power for the friends list, achievements, gamer tags, matchmaking, messaging etc. The bandwidth for the demos is also huge because they pay for it, not the publisher which is the norm.

But £40 a year each is a lot of money to be raking on for such a service.

Just wondering if MS have started to work on the new Xbox, I presume it will get 2009-2010 release, the 360 has done well but its reliability issue have let it down.

AFAIK its planned to be called the

Xbox QUAD but has a funny symbol not the words quad. I believe this is becuase its aimed to compete with PS4 if it exists then and also becuase it has a QUAD core processor..

They released some info at a press conference.. saying

Xbox "Quad"
"The Power of Four" was the tag line i believe.

They are also planning to release information on a PPU Hardware spec soon, although it is likely to be produced by Havok.

In answer to the OP's question... Yes Microsoft are working on on the next gen.. However whether the shareholders will allow this machine to ever be released is still open to question...

No-one here can answer this. Only time will tell. The 360 has been a failure as far as the shareholders are concerned.. It's loosing them money which has held back the stock price of Microsoft causing investors to look elsewhere. The Japanese market penetration never ever happened AND never will. So can a big player play in only two of the three territorries? I think not. That's a 33% dis-advantage right from the word go... And to make matters worse it's plane sailing for the others to clean up that market.. Currently at Nintendo's advantage.

These are the questions that the shareholders and decision makers will be throwing across the boardroom table. Chances are NONE of them are gamers and will only look at profits / losses.

Another thing worth mentioning is the reliability / replacements have also bumped up final sales figures. So There's probably not even really 12mil out there. I for one am on my 4th 360... All replaced from the store... So I've recorded 4 sales but in reality only ever purchased one.

These are the bad points.. The good points are that this is putting the microsoft name out there even further. Gamewise it's way above sony, and now it's stolen most of Sony's ace's out of the palm it's its hand.

For us the consumer we want it to stay, its a decent product apart from it's reliability / noise issues. Live is the best thing since sliced bread. Sony have really missed the boat on this one.. It's the complete opposite to the 360... Star hardware, sloppy online support.. The 360 very sloppy hardware but star quality software design.

For me personally I am finding myself going for 360 titles as apose to PS3 simply for the live functionality. Fifa08 as an example. I do hate the DVD spin noise though and a one player game I would go with the PS3 ver for this very reason.

Sony should win driving the final nail in the xbox product name but they are making a hard time for themselves, so it's not all over just yet. As above only time will tell. All we can do is speculate for the time being.
