my friend bought a mini as she loves them but she nearly got hit and now she's selling it after only a few months

then it got me thinking isnt driving a mini no safer than driving a baked bean can, you're literally sitting in the crumple zone :(

if it's the original 1960's designed mini then no not really compared to a modern small car. It was designed years before anyone had heard of a front impact test or crumple zones so it's as safe as a nearly 50 year old tiny car made of what is probably now rusty steel can be.

If it is a new one then I guess it passes the modern standards so probably.

Surely we are talking about the Mini here (as in the retro one not the BMW one)... in which case... yes.. they are death traps. But exceedingly fun death traps :D

Old minis certainly arn't safe. They were designed long before safety became a major concern.

I'd rather a motorbike. My friend had one for a little while with rather wide wheels and very stiff suspension. It might as well have been on the bump stops! It was damned fun though, although having an ill fitting passenger harness had me feeling rather worried!

its this mini, i told her not to buy one from the start but she didn't listen lol

she's now looking at the new bmw mini with a budget of about 8k

That doesn't look in bad nick at all, market for minis is all over the place currently though so I'll be interested to see what she gets... Usual rust spots being A panels, scuttle?

Can't decide whether I prefer them detangoed or not. I'm normally against detangoing but that pic makes it look great. I'll have to try and see a white lense one in real life before I decide on mine...

'50s. Oh and the designer was on record as saying safety wasn't relevant because the mini was aimed at people too careful and sensible to have an accident.

This thread has now made me think of T-Rex, how morbid is that?

Safety is just about the last thing I consider when choosing a car. No idea why and it hasn't changed in over ten years of driving. But then I've driven cars with no bonnet, cars with no doors (:D) so structural integrity has never been much of a worry.
