Are Monitors less forgiving?

Bit of a strange one I have a CRG9 49' Samsung ultrawide monitor, before that I was using a Sony 4k UHD TV

Text, smoothness and sharpness are miles better on the Samsung monitor, however watching the same 4k videos on YouTube it seems everything is playing in 720p the quality of the videos are shockingly bad. I'm connected by DP and running 120Hz Youtube is 100% playing in 4K quality.

Its very hard to explain, my HP laptop screen is poor compared to this however videos are different, I guess I am just wondering what could be up? I'm lost as it's just like watching 720p

Sadly I looked into this and its just the resolution youtube detects. Its a pain in the arse sadly. If you want the best then you need a 4k monitor. On some of the reviews for 1440p monitor they mention exactly the same thing about streaming sites like youtube

Thanks for this, I just downloaded some 4k content and played this via VLC and the picture quality is perfect. I guess it all down to YouTube then, such a shame :(

Sorry it's a bad habit not using the correct apostrophe :D that's me just been lazy!

Wouldn't be an issue if we used the metric system :D I've always found it confusing we use the "smaller" apostrophe for the bigger measurement, ' for inches, " for feet would make far more sense, but hey, that's imperial for you!

Anyway, back on topic, have you tried changing YouTube's resolution manually to a lower value and then back to 4k, e.g. to "reset" it? On my ultrawide it sometimes seems to default to a lower res, but changing it a couple of times seems to fix it.

what browser and cpu are you using? Youtube seems to play silly buggers with firefox and Ryzen 5x series out of the box

Hi it's a Ryzen 5600x and using Chrome. Before this monitor 4K YouTube content was perfect, I think like has been posted above it must be YouTube playing games due to the resolution of the monitor been 5120x1440
