are my temps too high?

I just installed a new artic cooler freezer 7 pro rev 2 onto my core i7 920. At stop clocks i am getting.

core 0 58

core 1 56

core 2 52

core 3 54

they do look a bit high for stock, you should be looking at around 35-40c with a decent cooler.

for example, i'm getting temps of around 40c, with an oc to 4ghz and noctua hsf.

try reseating the hsf and have another go at the thermal compound

Ok well i ran the intel cpu burn test and the cores all hit 100 and crashed so i had to take off the cooler and reapply some new paste. My idle temps were into the 40s but when i run intel cpu burn test the cores are reaching into the 90s core 1 is hitting 100. Surely that is not right with a artic cooler 7 pro.

is this stock speeds?

and its that cooler push pin? >_>

and yes do look rather high for stock, that cooler should be able to handle it

Its not push pin no. I dont know why the temps are so high. I know the heatsink is making good contact with the cooler i suppose i should rebuilt it to be sure. Only thing i can think of is that i may have not cleaned the processor properly. I just use tissue to get rid of the old compound nothing else.

Have you tied your cables and moved them all out of the way of the motherboard etc, and also got a decent front/back fan for good airflow. This will make a lot of difference if not.

A very poor job of cleaning the compound off wouldn't account for it shutting down under load. I frequently don't bother changing the paste at all, doesn't seem to matter. Currently using a mix of mx2 and as5 for no good reason, temps are good regardless. People worry too much about pastes.

Whether the heatsink is hot or not is a very good question. If it's burning hot, contact is fine, and either the heatsink fan is doing badly or airflow is really poor. If it's cool to the touch while the cpu shuts down, contact is bad.

The only time I've seen temperatures like that was when I got a keyboard cable caught in the cpu fan and I didn't notice until it turned off. My guess is a faulty mounting bracket for the heatsink, if you bought retail it's well worth trying the stock hsf to see if the issue remains.

Like i have said i have reseated the heatsink as i was using the older heatsink and temps are now 44 idle and after a while on intel cpu burn test they are inthe 90s some cores hit 100. I sure that my older intel cpu cooler went from 70s to 80s then 90s on full load.

I'm pretty positive that it's almost impossible for an i7 to get THAT hot with an Arctic Cooler 7, Does rebooting to your BIOS still show temps close to 90deg? Other than finding more accurate software that's the safest way of finding out. Try feeling your CPU heatsink also when it's burning in, if it's nice and warm that is good, and the temps are most likely half of what's showing. If it's burning hot then there must be something wrong with the chip, there's no way it should ever reach 90-100c.

My heatsink is warm not boiling. Ok so i have left for dead 2 running and all my cores are around 60ish on stock. In the bios the temps read about 44.

Your BIOS is going to be the closest to true reading. If it is only warm then it is most likely around that figure, maybe 50ish. That's a really good temperature and you definately have nothing to worry about. 60c during gaming sounds about right to me, that is most likely as close to the true temperature reading as you'll get. The 90c plus readings you've been getting in windows are completely wrong. Ignore it and be happy mate, your cpu is fine :)

I don't know really why the readings were going so high. I would imagine it's a glitch in speedfan, if it does it again I would take the side off the case and feel the heatsink, if it was genuinely that hot you would barely be able to touch it.

Use something like Realtemp or Coretemp to measure the temp as Speedfan sometimes has the Tjunction set incorrectly for Intel cpus.

If its still reading 90s+ can you feel around your cpu socket on the motherboard to see if it feels hot? Best place would be directly behind on the back of the board though not sure if you would want to remove it from your case.

Ok i am at the desktop top and i am using realtemp.

56 core 1 52 core 2 50 core 3 52 core 4

tj max not sure what this means.

46 48 50 48

This is at stock clocks with no cpu boost and no HT.

My volts are manual the cpu volts is even at 1.9

When i run intel cpu burn test i set the ram to maxium. What is it best running at?

You're not putting 1.9V through your cpu.

If you are unwilling to try the stock cooler it will be difficult to judge whether your new one is faulty, poorly installed or inadequate for your processor.

Speedfan is a poor means of judging temperatures. The bios reading must be below 68, or hwmonitor's readings should be under 80. They're measuring different things.
