Are Socket 1366 Systems still a good option?

I'm building two PC's for my web design office and am essentially looking at what parts I can get my hands on second hand.

I've got a Core i7 920 as my home PC and have seen a few reasonably priced SKT1366 parts on various classified sites but I was just wondering if it's still a good option for a PC that needs to be reliable and last a couple of years.

I have priced up a system with used i5 2500K's and that's the way I'm swinging but on one site I've seen an i7 920 CPU, Asus board and 6GB Ram go for £130...seems a real bargain to me.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

At the right price 1366 are great systems and should be no problem as office computers for several years. At the same time i7 2500K's are also good.

I would say whichever is cheapest.

On the sort of board I'm looking at, I agree, USB3 and SATA3 aren't available but I do know people with X58 systems with USB3 and SATA3.

I think though, as you say, it'll come down to which is cheaper in the short term.

yes they are/were available after first year or so.

I assume the extra speed of USB3 and Sata3 are really not an issue. I notice Sata difference when backing up large HDD and my external HDD dock is USB2. I installed a cheap 3.5" HDD hot swap 5.25" bay that is better than USB3 anyway.

I'm going to be building a really fast gaming computer for my girlfriend on the kind of budget I have available for her birthday end of October and an i7920 can be had for £80, a board with sata 2 usb 2 for around £65 and some 6gb of ram for £25 and with the upgrade a case at £50 and SSD for booting at £40 We're talking a really good system for her to pop her dvd drive and gpu/soundcard/xfx psu into because her athlonx3 is seriously limiting her gpu right now. This will basically be as good as you can get for a upgrade of this price.

You'll probably not get SATA3 or USB3 - if you don't mind then you could choose that to save some cash.

Cards are available though which will give you that making a second hand 1366 setup amazing value.

My 1156 setup with sata3 and usb3 added is plenty fast for what I need and will be for a long time.

Thanks. I'm looking at UD3R, UD5 and UD7 revision 2.0. Have old EX58-UD3R with HSF top exhaust. UD3R is 30mm but Gigabyte say UD5 and UD7 Northbridge cooler height are 40mm and 40-52mm repectively. My HSF uses 140mm fans and R2 case limits me to 177mm so mobo heatsink height might be an issue. My RAM is is 30mm and back motheboard heatsinks on UD5 & UD7 are 35mm so should work with HSF back exhaust.

Sorry for the ramble
