Hi guy i have decided at last not to carry on with the i5 route as the more i read customer reviews the more impressed i am.
so are the i7 920s being sold now as good as the old ones for overclocking ?

Thanks

Hi Chippy .

May I ask what was the main factor not going for the i5. For the price , seems like a decent chip. ?? Although the i7 is better.

But to answer your question , yes the new version are listed as D0 SLBEJ i7 920's (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-280-IN) and they clock really well. Have mine @ 4.2ghz.

Hi i read many people saying its better than i5 it multi tasks much better as its a server chip.

i read comments of people who brought them and they get the wow factor when they have changed from there last setup also saying how much extra speed they get and windows runs much smoother it does things quicker.

I know it costs more but i feel if i get the i5 im going to be thinking i should have gone i7 instead and i really dont want that to happen.

I have been looking for reviews from people who have already got i5 setup to see how they get on since there old setup but no one seems to say. they just talk about overclocking rather than how much better or worse its been.

So just had to make a choice and go for the i7 920.

commets like this

My old system was no slouch (A Q6600 @ 3GHz, 8GB RAM, P45 Mobo and 4870 GPU) but felt I needed a bit more 0omph in rendering/encoding and of course, gaming :)

So I bought the Gigabyte UD5, the i7 920, 12GB DDR3 Patriot, BFG 275 GTX and booted up. Wow. Not just a regular Wow but I mean wwwooooowww!!

Very very fast processor. Rendering times have improved tremendously, general OS usage and gaming is smoother.

A very worthy update which I expect to last for a few years. An excellent buy :)

I use a phenom 550 at the moment and when encoding its using upto 88% of the cpu so cant do much more and when writing i get buffer under runs because the system cant keep up.

M8 your never to old to game :D l might not be the best but its great fun, have a couple of beers while you play. l game with a good m8 who l met through gaming been good m8's now for 7yrs, LOL l'm 54yrs old and at the moment well into Battlefield2142 brill. Lock And Load Lady's, Let's Rock And Roll.

Its not just that m8 its time as well with work and so on.

I can understand where your coming from. I will be honest the i7 920 D0 is a superb little chip. It will seriously outperform the i5 in most harder cpu level tasks such as winrar extracts , encoding video and anything blueray / HD. The HT is the extra kick here.
But in 95% of every day tasks and normal computing you would not notice any difference on the desktop at all. Its only when the HT would be used its faster. Games too there is not much difference to be fair.
The 920 runs smoother Oc'ed it seems though. Most can achieve 4ghz with 1.3v max as opposed to i5 4ghz 1.4-1.5v. I achieve 4.2ghz @ 1.24. So the i7 do have good things to consider. Just doing my best to give you the info you need to consider.

I built this i7 rig 2months ago and i am glad i went i7 in then end. But for £150 the i5 is a great buy.

Have you considered looking at the 860 possibly. ??

Hope that helps.

Yes i did look t the i7 860 as the say in one review it out performs the i7 920 but many reviews give different opions and i listen to you guys who already have i7 920s up and running.
I could go i7 860 as i have the msi gd65 board already so that would save £200. i wish more owners of the new i7 860 would give there comments of how it performs.

WoW ,, you have a GD65 1156 board. ? Then I can only recommend the i7 860 to you. You would save that £200 and the difference is going to be minimal. It is up there with the 920 power wise for sure.

Regarding over clocking it does struggle to get stable it seems. I think Rich from OC had 3.9ghz stable. This being the highest clock achieved stable. But the performance of that @ 3.9ghz was as good as a 920 4ghz. Very minimal difference if any at all.

If I were in your position i would go with the 860. To spend another £200 to go all the way to 1366 if you dont really have to is mad.

I will see if i can source some links on the 860. ;)

The 860 would save me £200 and i could spend that money on a good cooler and a passive graphics card im after to make my system more quiet. I know theres not many coolers out yet for this socket. Also change my memory as i read this msi dont like cas9 memory for some reason.

Here are a few :

To be honest mixed reviews from all of them. But they do show good performance all round. Some show it to be closer to the i7 940 , others say its battling the 920. Overall its a good CPU.

Thats the trouble with reviews all are different and some times makes more confusion. i wonder what this ripjaw memory is like i know lots are buying that memory for the msi board or is there better.

Yes it's bound to beat the i7 920 -
i7 920 > 2.66GHz turbo about 3.2GHz
i7 860 > 2.80GHz turbo about 3.46GHz
It would be a different story if the i7 920 was at 2.8GHz + turbo, once you OC it 4.00GHz, it's still the king of the hill.

How long did it take you to learn overclocking m8 ?

Sure it's not your harddrive/s causing that?

Im using F1 hard drives but it is possible something is causing bottle neck but by the time i have finished everythink will e replaced just waiting on new psu to arrive as im changing from a 430watt to a 650watt.
then cpu video memory and cooler possibley the H50 not sure on that for definet.

I should say going to windows 64bit did help on the buffer under run a bit but didnt solve it all together.
