Are there any Conroe vs A64 game benchmarks?

I want to see how much faster a Conroe is compared to my 4400, to see whether its worth upgrading yet.

Conroe will get more fps on average but in reality you'll probably be more gpu bound and would better off upgrading your graphics card than getting a whole new system.

Just my opinion.

Yeah my 7800's are dinasours now (I can fry an egg on the side of my tower after gaming).

I looked at upgrading my graphics but it would cost a lot; just for a few more fps, was going to wait for the next generation graphics cards for crysis.

Everyone is going on about the Conroe like they're the second coming.

Had my pc a year now & if there is a significant speed increase to be had by upgrading I'll get saving (less beer Doh!).

Conroe is a good cpu, but I think that with the system you currently have, you'd end up disappointed after upgrading.
I don't think you'd see a very big gain in fps at all. At least not one thats worth the cost of upgrading your whole platform.

Not everyone, just the fanboys :p its because AMD have been on top for so long that giving Conroe to an Intel fan is like giving food to a starving man. Hence all the kafuffle over a cpu that will be beaten severely within the next 12 months.

to the OP:
dont bother upgrading, conroe or no conroe, the expense and hasstle would not out weigh the small gains in performance during game play that you may make.

I wish!

Juno's got the rig I'd like to own :p
I can't see any point upgrading 'till DX10 GPU's come out? Anyhow, Conroe's only good for producing a short lived feelgood factor followed by a trickle down the Intel lovers legs :p INNIT!

I really think you are using the wrong definition of "Fanboys".
If Conroe had been released with lackluster performance and had cost more than a faster AMD and people still bought them then yes - you could accuse people of being "Fanboys" (sorry, hate the word).
However the fact that Conroe has been released and that the top three models wipe the floor with anything else out there (at stock) and the rest of the line all beat their AMD equivalent with ease...
You're not a "fanboy" buying one - you are simply buying the best CPU currently available.
Only an AMD "fanboy" would say elsewise.

I have to agree with Stoofa - it has nothing to do with people having an affinity for AMD or Intel.

Its just that, on these forums particularly, people like to rave about the latest and greatest.

People absolutely raved about the Opterons and Athlon 64's a 6 months ago. Why? Because they were the best option available for top performance.

Now people are going crazy for Conroe. Why? You guessed it, its the best thing currently available in terms of performance.

What will people be talking about in 6 months time? Yep, you guessed it - whatever is the best thing about at the time!

as it currently stands, 17th August 2006, Conroe is faster than any crap AMD has out on the market.

Technically incorrect: there are some AMD chips that are faster than the lower-end Conroes. But on average, the 6600/6700/6800 are significantly faster when it comes to benchmarking.

There is little sense in upgrading from any recently-acquired system at this point in time. Wait until Windows Vista comes out and all of its hardware conflicts are resolved before running out and waving your money around. If all you do is benchmark your computer, then fine. If all you do is smoke rollies made with £50 notes, then fine. But to me, it would still rival the Scottish Parliament building as a waste of money. :)

The real point is you can get a £130 clocked at 1.87 gig and easily clock too 3gig, at the 2.4 mark you are passing what a fx 62 can offer in performance so really if you want value they best about now, but yes if you have a decent rig no point bothering.

I WANT MY HARD EARNED TAX BACK!!

Every time I drive past I cringe with embarassment - it is incredibly ugly, tacky and cheap looking, out-of-character and out-of-place, and worst of all stupidly overpriced!

if you're gaming in res 1600x1200 and higher you'd be much better off grabbing a second video card or updating to a faster single card than moving to the conroe platform.

it's a great cpu for sure but unless you need a new system a 3ghz amd rig will be plenty fast enough for quite a while yet.

Fully agree with you.
If you are at your upgrade cycle right now - you've had your PC for a year or whatever and you are considering an upgrade then right now it makes little sense to buy anything other than Conroe as even the cheapest will overclock so well.

If it's not your normal upgrade time there are other upgrades which will benefit you a lot more.

Nice thread?

Right on Stoofa :) Isn't this rather civilised for an AMD v INTEL thread? ;)

Informative thread, not much fencing...

If you have a new system to build then go Conroe, otherwise if you've already got a good AMD rig then don't bother unless you're loaded.

Think that about sums it up.

I first went the AM2 way had ddr2 ram from me P4 stuff i sold on, was not impressed so sold that stuff on and cost me £40 more for a 6300 conroe/mobo, got it at 2.8 gig now thats same speed as the X6800 so am more than happy with it atm.
