Are there any Dx9 graphics cards that are more powerful than a bottom range 8800gts?

For all todays games (none of which are dx10), is there any dx9 cards (top range 7900 or top range ATI card) that are better than the cheapest 8800gts? I'm guessing there must be purely because of the memory differences (320mb vs 512mb) and SLI in 1 cards.

Does the 8800s having dx10 make buying any other type of card pointless?

Most people dont buy the 8800 series because of dx10
most get it becuase its the fastest dx9 card around
the 1950xtx is the only card which comes close to beating a 8800gts 320mb

No the 8800GTS 320mb being available for under £180 (in some places) or around £190 - £200 are the reason that buying any other 'top end' card is pointless.

Just like the X1950pro being available for just over £100 makes the 8600GTS pointless (unless you want one for the Video purposes)

No none at all, and as above, the 8 series are the fastest Dx9 cards around, no one is buying them for Dx10, bit pointless considering they are already over 5 months old and theres still no sign of Dx10, theres no point buying the 8 series for Dx10 as they are the slowest Dx10 cards you can get, and thats before its here, 8800's = Dx9, when Dx10 games start surfacing everyone will be getting the Dx10 cards that are out then for them, they wont be buying the old out of date 8 series. :)

This is one of the reason why am not sure about getting one of the 8800 cards and just getting X1950pro till near chrimbo but eveyone says i should get one anyway

Thats because they totally destroy the x1950 pro in Dx9 and are so cheap. :)

What about the X1950XT? How does that rate compared to 8800GTS 320? I've looked at the handy graphics card comparisonator at Toms Hardware ( http://www23.tomshardware.com/graphics.html ) and it doesn't exist in their drop downs, nor does the 8800GTS 320.

So I've tried comparing an X1950XT-X and that rates lower than an 8800GTS 640, but only a bit in real world situations.

It's just that I got one on order now and I only paid £120 inc postage. I'm hoping that that's a bargain that will stomp on the DX9 games I'm currently playing - Oblivion, Prey, Dark Messiah, Condemned, HL2, Titan Quest, Tomb Raider Legend, Broken Sword 4, er.... Morrowind (with DX9 graphics extender) :)

DX10 and Vista can kissmyhairyarse ;)

Is the 8800 gts twice as powerful /twice as many frame rates as the 1950 pro?
if not why is it almost double the price one has to wonder.

Computer hardware never works out that way.

You need to take into account that the X1950Pro is based on older architecture and has had a die shrink to 80nm, amongst many other reasons that the X1950Pro would be cheaper to produce.
