Are there any estimates as to when 5G is going to start rolling out?

I was just wondering if anyone who follows things like this knows when the 5G mobile phone networks are going to start rolling out? I kind of feel that it would be pointless to upgrade my phone at this point if the next phone doesn't support 5G networking seeing as it should be out at some point soon.

You've got a while yet I reckon. EE have plans to roll it out in 16 major cities by the end of 2019. Although you'll probably need to sell a kidney to get a plan in its infancy.

Will it really bother you if you don't have 5g though?

Not really. I tend to use Wifi mainly on my phone but I figure if I am going to get a new phone it might as well support 5G just for a bit of extra future proofing.

Wouldn't bother with 1st gen 5G handsets, just like any 1st gen products it'll be rough round the edges so to speak.

2020 before it has useful coverage in major cities. 2025 for other towns. 2030 before rural areas never get it and it gets replaced with something else.

I agree tho, not buying a phone until 5G is usable where I live + work.

5G? LOL. Only just got 4G here less than 2 years ago. Certainly not worrying if any upcoming phone purchase will support 5G or not.

I wouldn't get too excited about 5G to be honest.

This. Terrible building penetration, terrible reception unless good line of sight, antenna easily blocked by hands....

If i can't get a decent 4G signal now there's no hope for 5G!

I can't even get what would be classed as decent 3G speeds around where I live so this is probably one of the last phone technologies I'm even remotely excited about.

Why do we care about 5G? Seriously?

4G should be around 20Mbps right? What are you doing on your phone that requires more than that, exactly? Netflix recommend 5Mbps for HD. It's even only 25Mbps for Ultra HD but I don't see many people wandering around with 4k phone screens? Am I missing something?

My thoughts exactly. I've done 4g speed tests well in excess of 80mb/s in cities, and in my home town its usually 20-40mb which is beyond ample for any media consumption on a mobile.

Some people use a data only SIM card and device as a portable hot spot if their broadband goes down. For that reason, 5G would be great.

That's all well and good but why do you need 20mbps+ on a hotspot?

Edit; sorry misread. I assume you mean at home. Makes a bit more sense but it's not much of an argument for 5g "as a backup" lol

My local telecoms has just increased there mobile price plans big time and am sure this is to paid for 5G :(

1GB per month plan has gone from £10 to £13.75
