Im playing it on win 7, hasnt crashed in 10 hours of gameplay. The pathfinding on units and general unit clumsiness makes me want to tear my hair out though. Was it always that bad ?
Yes, from what I remember. About half the game was spent setting real-time waypoints for your units (go here, then south a bit, diagonally past this headland, up, right...) - harks back to the days when you couldn't just group up your army and set them to camp in formation half a map away while you return to your base and micromanage while they travel there on their own.
I first played it with Core 2 Quad Q6600, 2 GB Ram and Geforce 8800GT at 1280x1024 resolution with most settings on full and it ran fine. A little slow down was noticeable when you dropped a nuke or a daisy cutter but it was manageable. There are loads of settings you can turn up.down if you need to though.
