as the title says really. im looking for somewhere decent to go on valentines day. google is not delivering and i dont know the area at all :(

ideally the place must match some/all of the following criteria:

  • italian/french/spanish or even russian cuisine (the last one is probably a really long shot) - not overly keen on indian/chinese/thai etc
  • not overly posh (if u need a dinner jacket and ball gown to eat there, its a no go :p)
  • located around the centre of town
  • a bar that offers good cocktails would be a bonus

thanks in advance

I love Rum Wong - it's a Thai restaurant. It's been six years since I left Guildford though so I wonder if it's still there...

Must be. Website is still active. It might look overly posh from the site but it's not. It's posh but not ballgown/dinner jacket posh. The food is excellent though. You are served by Thai people dressed up in the country's regalia.

EDIT: Here am I getting carried away and you're not overly keen on Thai food. Shame on you! :)

loch fyne in gford is nice for seafood, guildford is full of nice resturants, plus there is olivos which is a nice italian. plus there is a tapas bar type place near the top of town but cant remember the name its in the old odeon building its nice and does cocktails

There's another decent thai place i know of, i know you mentioned you weren't after thai food, but it has amazing views looking out over guildford. It has a bar/drinks area too.

It's called Thai Terrace, they don't seem to have a website.

I to was going to suggest the rum wong. Its no Blue Elephant but it does have a very nice atmosphere. Top place.

cheers for the suggestions guys, ill have to go and investigate.

i did try searching on top-table myself but only got 1 result as well - it wasnt even in the centre of guildford :p

Guildford doesnt have many wonderful restaurants from what I've seen. However Loch Fyne is ok. You should have a scout around and maybe you'll spot something other that the piza hut BK wagamama or nandos. Good Luck.
Off topic yes, have you thought about getting a train into London? Its quick from Guildford and once in London there is much more and you'll almost certainly be able to fulfill all of your criterion.
Ive never found a Russian restaurant before so if you find one give it a mention in here please :)
Good luck

yeah i did consider london but it will be a bit of a trek seeing as i have to go from reading to guildford first :p

i've never found a russian restaurant either but i want to :(

i live in guildford!

Loch fyne as said before is very nice if you like seafood,

theres an italian called olivios or something, very close to the town center.

Anyone else here live in guildford?

Yeah me :)
Been here a few years, but I'm actually a Northerner and everything still seems a expensive :D

To the OP - It's a shame you didn't list Thai food as Guildford has plenty of good Thai restaurants.
There's Rum Wong and Thai Terrace that have already been mentioned, and also Sir And madam which is down Jeffrey's Passage /snigger.

Thai Terrace is about as good as it gets. Had a meal there last year on a beautiful night, could see Wembley Stadium from our table. The service was great and the food excellent. Definitely the best restaurant I know of in Guildford.
