fed up on going to bt/virgin/sky and checking the cable availability. nobody in custoemr services seems to know anything about the possibility of having it installed in future.

Are there any "insiders tips" on how to find out. Is there a lobbying channel to get together with locals and ask for cable to be installed?

I live in zone 3 in London I would have expected it to have cable by now. Every week there's some sort of roadworks going on around here.

Well only Virgin do cable out of those 3, so if you want cable only they can tell you their plans.

As for the BT Openreach FTTx rollout there are lots of resource to find out if/when you'll be part of the upgrade.

What does samknows.com say about your exchange? If that is not helpful, try a FTTx lookup here: http://www.coolwebhome.co.uk/fibre/checker.php

Thanks for that, exactly what I was looking for cable/fibre all the same to me,. Just want something that can skyrocket the internet connection here because we've got a lot of computers in the house and it does feel quite slow when everyone is on it.

It says I have FTTC available, Exchange should get service in the future, best guess is Calendar Year 2013 Check again in a few months.

What does it mean? there's a fibre connection to a "mains" of some sort, but the homes/phone sockets need to be connected?

heres a screenshot, with my postcode and area masked out.

What that is saying is that you are either on cab P5 or P6, most likely P5 and that is on Phase 9b which means all things considered you should be seeing something very soon - I think the holding date for most Phase 9b is Dec 2012 but they slip.

A exchange goes live, but not all of the cabs are made live at the same time so there can be a delay in the exchange going live and your particular cab being enabled.
