I have bought a new Light dimmer for my living room, unfortunatly I am not sure which wires go where in the new switch

Below is a picture of the old dimmer and a picture of the new one. I would be grateful if some one could show me which wires goes where

TIA

All the new dimmer switch has is a box, and on there it just has C, L1, and L2 and the ground.

I've squinted as hard as I can but I just can't quite make out what it says on the back in the second picture

Well c means common. So either the permanent live or switch live would go in that place. In this case the black connected to the brown via a connector is the common. And the blue and yellow wires are the strappers. So they would go in the L1 & L2. Although it dosn't matter which way around they go. This should work and the only way to find out is to try it. But who ever wired it originally may have had some silly ideas.

Cheers i'll try that. I don't speak to the ppl who owned the house originally. We had a bit of a fall out in the end.

As tractor man said :)

Oh and make sure those earths are connected to the back box, and as its a metal plate fit a link between box and plate(though strictly speaking you can just connect them both to the plate and allow the screws to earth the backbox as long as it has one fixed lug) but better to fit the link and cover all bases

I trust those reds are connected in a connector block and not just twisted?

Oh, and you should fit a short bit of red sleeve over all the wires you have there (except the earths)

Can't use red any more (European Harmonisation and all)
