are there less troubles these days

Id agree with some of the above, going back 10+ years, heartaches and headaches a fair bit.

Win 98 would random bluescreen a fair bit, conflicts with new graphics cards and chipsets around the time, sound cards would often effect performance if you happen to have one X game didn't get on with. Plus with everything being manual installation, you could end up with an evening of pulling your hair out when the network lost itself for the 2nd or 3rd time that week:)

All good now though, just about the only grief you get these days are compatability problems with old games on the vis/7 systems.

Shame somebody doesn't sit down and sort that out (if it is that simple):)

Yeah, slightly less common as time goes and generally much better now than it was 10-15 years ago. Of course, the benefits far outweigh any inconveniences which are too often blown way out of proportion by console fanboys..

If you spend the cash and get a decent PC/components then you should fine you get a very small amount of options.
However if you skimp along at the minimum required settings than you can expect to receive lots of errors and incompatibilities etc.

I have never under understood how people can have all these "problems". Simply install the game, double click the launch icon, job done...

pretty much yes, along time ago there were a lot of games that had issues with refresh rates and thats probably what the op is remembering.

games would fail to launch unless there fresh rate on your monitor was set to 60hz at a time when most people were using CRT monitors with upto 120hz refresh rates.

i think during the last few years games have had a lot better compatibility with no need for individual fixes based on what gfx card your using etc

In the end I suppose it comes down to 'unlucky' hardware.
Get decent stuff that gets the thumbs up from the majority of gamers and you should mostly be OK.
In that way it doesn't even have to be the most expensive gear.

PC gaming has far LESS problems since Windows 95 was introduced.

For those of you who think I'm joking, you must be too young to remember boot disks and hacking your autoexec.bat and config.sys. :)

Oh yeah. I remember the days where you sometimes had to manually install the games. No setup.exe to be found anywhere.

Generally things are much easier than they used to be.

/shudder

I know I was very young at the time, but I can still remember those days and when you look back at what you had to do back then to get a game to run... we've got it easy today! :D
