Are there only two chip manufacturers now?

Is it just AMD and Intel producing CPU's? When I was learning about PC's I heard the name Cyrix bandied about, although I never saw one. What happened, just couldn't compete?

Lol I remember Cyrix, thats going back some . . .

I seem to remember they were faster for than any Pentium processor at the time but suffered quite badly in gaming or anything that made heavy use of floating point calculations. They used that funny PR rating thing to compare their speeds against an INTEL chip. PR200+ was faster than a PENTIUM 200MHz in a lot of benchmarks despite running at just 166MHz . . .

Do Via still make their low power processors?
Absolutely. They have a 1GHz model that dissipates about 0.1 Watts.

Also, IIRC National Semiconductor took control of Cyrix and integrated their IP into their processes.

EDIT: After that NC sold Cyrix to Via.

so is it posible that there are processors out there with more performance than intel and amds, or are the ones we dont hear about mainly for low power consumptions and heat dissapation?!

Of course, desktop PCs that you and me use are only one market ;)

Whether they'd be as cost-effective and compatible for our use as an Intel/AMD rig is pretty much a resounding no, since if they were, we'd have IBM/Sun CPUs in more than just consoles and servers :)

man look at that heat sink!!!! , i guess they still make risc processors but now mac's have gone intel not sure who buys them.

Cyrix didn't they merge with IBM ? I think IBM have stopped making CPU's now.

Tommy and Fischer Price probably have a few and Texas Instuments do a few but unless your a three years old i think your digital watch has more processing power!

There's still plenty of companies making CPUs, but not many (Intel, AMD and Via?) make ones that will run x86 code natively.

Think the XBox360 uses an IBM PowerPC based chip? and the PS3 uses an IBM Cell processor.

and dont forget the scientific super computers, completly incompatible with everything except its one use, working out a specific number LAWL

i saw one once that was literaly as big as a room, they said it had over 100x the proccesing power of the top of the range (back in about 2000). i think those sort of computers are a waste just sitting there working out pi, or prime numbers

How come the xbox, PS3 etc you only pay about £300 for graphics that Seem superior to PC's, yet to get anywhere near on a PC you have to spend over a thousand?!

HAH, rubbish m8, you do not need 1000 any day, i spent under 500, and mine plays better than a ps2, i will agree with things like xbox360, hd gaming, yes for pc that costs a lot, its the market. they can mass produce consoles, but pc's built part by part for gamers and alike, they know we will buy them so they whack up the price, do you honestly think anyone would buy a console priced at 1000

you can almost garuntee any proper gamer will spend well ove 2000 in his life on pc componants
