I just ordered these parts from overclockers, was this a good choice, I can still change it because it's not arriving until Tuesday. :D I currently just have the Dell 2407WFP.

(1) Intel Core 2 Duo E4300 "LGA775 Allendale" 1.80GHz (800FSB) - Retail (£82.24)

(2) Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium 64-Bit Edition DVD - OEM - 1Pk (66I-00788) (£75.19)

(3) Samsung SH-S183ABEBN 18x18 DVD±RW Dual Layer Serial ATA ReWriter (Black) - OEM (£22.31)

(4) OcUK 2GB (2x1GB) PC2-6400 800MHz DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (£82.24)

(5) Corsair HX 520W ATX2.2 Modular SLI Compliant PSU (CMPSU-520HXUK) (£70.49)

(6) Linksys WMP54GS Wireless-G PCI Adapter with SpeedBooster (£38.19)

(7) Western Digital Raptor 74GB WD740ADFD (EDIT) Changed to 150GB WD1500ADFD Raptor (£143.34)

(8) Abit Fatal1ty F-I90HD ATI Micro ATX (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard (£76.36)

Also I am ordering the Silverstone TJ08 case from another site and will be gettiing a 8800 640mb when I get some more money and will probably get the Ninja cooler and then I can overclock the E4300 to over 3Ghz. :D

all looks good part from the Raptor, you obviously haven't factored in your storage requirements

personally I would have gone for either a single 7200rpm drive or a pair in RAID which can beat the Raptor in most cases.

I was thinking if I run out of space then I could upgrade to another 74GB raptor and then put them in a Raid configuration.

I would have gone for the 500GB seagate/samsung personally for less money. Vista 64 bit is crap atm if your planning on using any PCI/USB devices with it.

I am going to use a wireless card and usb mouse and keyboard. What kind of problems are there? I suppose I could change to the 32bit version if it was going to be really bad compatibility.

Well you shouldnt have any problems with a USB mouse and keyboard as Vista detects them automatically, but I don't think Vista automatically installs drivers for a wireless card so you will need to check with the manufacturer whether or not they currently have drivers for Vista 64.

The new Western Digital "....AAKS" series of HDDs are very good, I have a 500GB, and it is almost 7MB/s faster than my 74GB Raptor (8MB cache).

Also Seagate 7200.10s are fast in regards to Average read. :)

I heard the raptor is the best in general performance because it has the fastest seek time which is what I will be using it mainly for. Also is there any good ones with lower space than 500GB as that is way to much for me.

i have 2x 200 gb 7200:10 in raid 0 which are cheaper and faster

also id have got a gigabyte ds3 or asus 650i over that mobo TBH

id have squeezed a few more pennies out of my piggy bank and got 2gb crucial balistix

just my tupence;)

id have got 2gb crucial balistix too as they are so cheap now

also agree with getting the asus board

and also agree witht he aak's in raid they are really fast

no get vista 64 it is cool i have no probs with it. it will install most if not all the drivers for u.
Thats simply not true though, I had to wait 2 months for my sound card drivers, and currently my tv card and mobile phone don't have drivers for it. Various programs don't work either e.g. Real Player & Intel TAT to name a couple.

The asus board can only overclock to 300mhz FSB! I did a lot of research into the MATX boards and the Abit seemed like the only decent board able to overclock. :D

I'll have a look at the hard drive forum then as it is still not too late to change the order.

Also with regards to the memory, I am only overclocking to 350MHZ fsb as that is the max on this board so the OCUK memory seemed like it would be good enough as i'd actually be downclocking the FSB on it which should allow me to improve the timings a bit? That was the thoery anyway, do you think I would I get much more benefit getting the crucial then?

That ram will not hurt any overclock with a 4300. Running it at it's stated speed will get a overclock of 3.6ghz (100%) and you are'nt going to do that on air. Highly unlikely anyway.

Deffo would not have gone for a Raptor though. Overpriced and a small capacity. A single 7200.10 or a pair in raid 0 would have been better. Cheaper too.

I would also change that mobo if you are getting Vista. There is a known problem with it and Vista. I am not sure if Abit has fixed it yet. Judging by their recent performance probably not. A DS3/DS3P would be much better. Don't get sucked in by the Fatal1ty hype. It does'nt mean it's good for clocking according to Abit.

The abit motherbord is the only one which can get to 350FSB that I have heard of, all the others max out at 300.

I could swap vista 64 bit to the 32 bit though as from the sound of it there are a lot of problems, would that be a good idea?

My DS3P is running at 378x9 for 3.4ghz and it will go a hell of a lot higher than that. I think it's good for at least 450mhz. Probably more. Realistically you will not be going past 400 with a 4300.

It's nothing to do with a version of Vista and that board, it's Vista full stop, and that board.
