So I'm looking at getting a 2nd hand Ryzen 7 CPU and I'm seeing a lot that are listed as being 'Brand New' which appear to be in a plastic transparent blister pack with an orange sticker to seal the package which is labelled as 'Shipping Seal'...

Are these actually brand new CPUs, did AMD ship anything like this or are these counterfeit CPUs or the like???

So these are legit AMD CPUs?. Not rebranded or any other underhanded stuff.?

Did the CPUs you bought from AliExpress work 100% no issues??

They're legit.

That's not to vouch for any seller though of course, not much you can do about that apart from buying from someone with decent feedback.

Maybe the prices on AliExpress have crept up since you bought from there last, as theres not much difference from eBay prices

Yes they're legit

Yes. I've bought a couple of 5600s, a 5700x, a 7500F and a 7700 and all worked with no issues.

Oh that's a shame, and yes I've not bought any CPUs from ali in about 8-9 months so not sure of the pricing anymore

Usually fine. AMD has a habit of dumping old stock into China, which then appears on Aliexpress etc for seemingly too-good-to-be-true deals.

Just ask all the folks rocking 5700X3D’s which cost about half what I paid for my UK retail unit. I literally paid £100 for a box :(

There are 2 types of brand new cpus Retail and OEM.
Retail is the one you buy from the shops that comes boxed with warranty.
OEM (original equipment manufacturer) are cpus for system builders, that fall on the open market usually without warranty

True. But tbh - other than the recent Intel debacle - if a CPU is still working after 6 months it will still be working after 6 years.

Intel’s 13th and 14th failures proved otherwise. You have to look at the failure curve, but as time goes on, the chances of a CPU failure do typically reduce as long TDP requirements aren’t exceeded.

My 5800x failed 1 month before the end of its warranty. But this was the first time i have ever had a failure, I have always upgraded every 5 years or so, so they are very reliable. AMD replacement service was good, upgraded to a 5800x3d and sold the replacement on.

I literally used the Intel debacle as the exception that proves the rule.

For a CPU at 6 months its failure rate is statistically tiny. At around 5-6 years the chances of failure increase briefly as you hit the first early failure stage. After that you pass into a long period of stability before long term degradation starts to set in. For a gaming PC things are more complicated as where those failures occur depends on hours used. As we seen with Intel, power users would reach failure points early and have multiple replacements while the average gamer maybe have only had one failure or even non at all depending on up time.

I am talking about official channel stock here. Slightly hookie grey market channel Zen stock, sold at unbelievable prices with orange stickers are unknowns.

my dead 7800X3D that worked fine for nearly two years has entered the chat...

Seriously though, other than the X3Ds failing and the recent intel debacle, CPUs do seem to last forever.

These are mostly "grey market" CPUs that aren't "supposed" to be sold to consumers intended for far-eastern system integrators, etc., so you will have little in the way of warranty or comeback etc. from reports elsewhere probably 85% of people have got genuine CPUs but a few haven't - mostly depends on the seller and that some sellers are more scrupulous at checking what stock they are buying in/moving on than others.

TBH it is more the 9000 series, to a minor extent, which are bucking that trend, though I will caveat that with the longer term outcome on the 13th/14th gen is still an unknown. An increasing number of people are having 9800X3Ds die despite being stable for 6 months and while it is significantly an ASRock issue it is happening on other makes and models of motherboard as well though at a lower frequency.

To put it into perspective all this talk of mass failures and 20-100% failure rates on the 13th and 14th gen but reports are barely a dribble on consumer forums and aside from a minor up-tick early on it has pretty much gone quiet on the enterprise front as well (and that isn't from companies dumping their 13th and 14th gen - though some have many are still using their 13th and 14th gen estate) in comparison despite only a few hundred, probably in the region of 1000 now, 9000 series CPUs failing in a specific manner there is a steady trickle of reports far in excess of reports of Intel degradation failures, a trickle but a steady one, despite the failure rate still being well under 1%. If Intel CPUs really were seeing mass degradation failures it would be a deluge of reports on places like Reddit.

Again I'll caveat that with the long term outcome of the 13th and 14th gen is still an unknown and when they are 6 year old CPUs things might look different but as things stand anyone claiming there is massive ongoing failures of 13th and 14th gen are frankly talking out their behind.

We've recently turned out a few older relatives, etc. systems where they've sadly passed away or now beyond using a PC and some of those are ~20 year old CPUs or older which have seen routine use all that time - especially the Core 2 systems if taken care of really do last especially the CPUs.
