Are these PSUs any good?

I think very few people who are involved in PCs would advise the use of the OcUK model in this case. Heck, I think even OcUK probably wouldn't.

The question has been answered a million times already, time to let the thread and pointless bickering die.

Well then thats confusion on my part *shrug* the OP on that thread was talking about building an i7/i5 system for gaming his original post didn't mention anything about a 940 (pretty obvious i recon considering i said "Have you considered" but meh) if it was somewhere in there i missed it scanning through. Big deal mate do you have anything constructive to say on this thread?

time to let the thread and pointless bickering die.

Indeed this is getting pointless and petty. Thanks for the advice guys, ill stick with the OCZ then.

The 625w Sapphire ones were similarly priced (£48ish a week ago, have gone up a lil now tho) and recommended by many, OcUk seem like a reputable company so i was curious about there own branded PSU. Again, whats your problem with this query?

lol mmk, at the point you said
then buy this psu, and ignore the constructive criticism in this thread.
id already said

Im still allowed to defend the topic of my thread as not being ignorant which is what your attempting to say.

Honestly mate this is getting pathetic and im done with it, thanks again for the advice folks.

There's cheap and there's cheap, though. £50 for a PSU isn't cheap tat territory really imho. £10-20 for a reasonably high W rating - that's cheap tat. I always find the Rolls Royce PSU OCD on here a little amusing :). Nobody complained about the Saphire Pure 625 modular when that was also £50. Made by Enermax and proves you can get quality for that price level. I picked one up and it's great - supports my pretty heavily OC'd rig perfectly stably and runs silently with the fan hardly spinning (even in my 'thermally disadvantaged' case, eh Big.Wayne :)). I doubt in reality that the OCUK branded PSU with the same rating/features/price is significantly different, to be honest. Gets a few good reviews in the shop and probably worth a punt if you're not scared into the Rolls Royce PSU OCD. Just me 2p :)

Ah I did notice that old thread and knew it used to go for £80. Didn't realise the drop was to clear out stock - wonder why that is?

I'd still say the OCUK is highly likely to be fit-for-purpose and happily power a PC requiring less than 650W. Statistically you'd have to be very unlucky for that not to be the case, I should imagine.

Looks like I was lucky with the Saphire though :)

Yeh exactly liampope, the OcUK one has some nice reviews which made me wonder despite it being suspiciously cheap. The recent price of the Sapphire confounded this because i heard nothing but good things and like you im not interested in "Rolls Royce" PSUs its a gimmick to mark up the price of something that costs next to nothing to manufacture. I just want the PC to turn on and not explode lol :).

That said the impression of the OcUK ones ive gotten here are pretty negative so guess ill go with OCZ or XFX as there pretty decent, tho if stock comes back in of those nice Sapphires and the price is still under £55-60 might go that way.

even in my 'thermally disadvantaged' case, eh Big.Wayne

Wayne and his bloody persuasive arguments! talked me into going for the Antek 300, and ofc i just cant resist a couple of front fans upping the case budget to £60!

i have 3 of the 450w ocuk psu's that i got when they were on special for £13 to see what they where like.

i used 1 in an i3 build i did for a friend, i3 530, onboard gfx, 1 hdd, 1 optical, 2 80mm case fans, just really a surfing and pottering about machine and the psu is fine for that kind of thing.

i was building a spare machine for myself and put one in that to see how it would cope and it was fine with the original components, x2 6000+, 1hdd, 1 optical, 2 90mm case fans and a radeon hd3450 and the psu was fine for that also but then i put a 9800gt in instead of the 3450 and the psu fan ramped up and a noticeable humming sound started becoming more audible at which point a put in a corsair cx 400w which coped without a problem.

so from my experience i would say these psu's are fine for general machines with mid range cpu's and onboard or low powered gfx cards, as soon as you put in any higher power drawing components i would recommend getting something of a better quality and i would not myself use these in a machine that draws more than half of their listed rating.

i hope this helps.

Thanks a bunch chipps this was exactly the sort of information i was looking for and it certainly does help, i don't suppose you have any experience with the 650w version?

Ok cool thanks all the same, guess i wont risk it maybe one day ill go multi GPU and i don't want the damn thing to go nuclear on me when i do. Just hope those Sapphires come back before Crimbo!

Thanks for the answers, all i was really looking for was if i could trust the OcUK ones. Im fully aware of the risks in a PSU and why you should get a quality branded one, since OcUK seem like a reputable company i was hoping there PSUs might be worthwhile. Ill most likely be powering a Phenom2 system with a gtx 470.

the cheap PSU's are generally ok and reliable if your not trying to draw too much power from them.

however, your talking about a very power hungry GPU, and i wouldn't risk such a cheap PSU on that

maybe if you was talkign a 460, it might be ok, but a 470 is whole other level
