Are these temperatures correct?

My cpu was running at around 50-60c on my computer. It is a i3 with a stock cooler, thinking that this was too hot i removed the cooler dedusted the pc and reapplyed thermal paste to the cpu. i think that my mistake was that i used too much thermal paste making the cpu temp to rise to 70-80c. Noticeing what i had done i took off the cpu cooler and wiped excess thermal paste, the cpu is running at 35-40 idle.

Note: used realtemp for temperature

would this be much of an improvement or would a air cooler of the same price be just as good?

Yeah i use a h60 with one fan
As far as a the temps, its around the same idle as a air cooler but the water would perform better at max temps
Miles better than the stock cooler
But if you dont overclock, then no need

Its a good enough cooler for an i5 with mild overclock so should be more than enough for your i3, but you are correct in saying that it'll just perform the same as an air cooler. A cheaper air one like a Gelid Tranquillo would cool it just the same.
