I'm in the middle of a project and i need a pointer device. Unofficially i prefer optical trackpads but can't seem to find one that's USB at a sensible price, and i don't know if the (really good looking) mac vertical trackpad will work with windoze/linux on a more standard pc setup

looking for an internal device anyway and i was thinking back to the original EEEpc which had internal parts using the USB. Are laptop trackpads/touchpads/whatever you call them USB wiring but with a different plug? i'm thinking i can change the plug easily enough if it'll then work... or are there any that are like that if not all are? i'm pretty impressed with the synaptics multitouch in my netbook, many such pads look like they could be removed and put into another chassis

does anyone know of an optical trackpad that is USB and could be made to work in win/lin? ideally it'd be an internal device or something i can crack open and fit to my custom housing.. i used to like the little IBM pointer nipples

pretty sure that most touch pads need the to be plugged into the motherboard to function, a lot of laptops have the buttons on the motherboard so would be impossible to transfer or house separately.

Just typing USB touchpads brings up a few standalones. I have to admit, there are usually more than just 4 wires on the trackpads I have seen, so I am guessing they are mostly proprietery.
