Are valve creating a console?

Rumours abound of a "hardware" release, not necessarily a console. More likely to be a dedicated steam box, NAS style, usable by whatever gaming machine you utilise.

No

Notice that last link was dated March, and stated that Valve would announce the console at GDC, which was also in March.
And what happened at the GDC?

Valve explicitly debunked the rumour of a console. They also pointed out they had been working on the 10 foot interface version of steam (long overdue), called Big Picture, and had mocked up some boxes for testing purposes. This is what got the rumours started.

The recent advertising for a hardware expert could mean anything - a peripheral based on the companion cube for instance...

valve gpu with an actual red valve from HL to switch bios would be awesome they could do lots of themed heatsink coolers too.

I thought they were making a foray into the peripherals market.

This what I heard also. Gabe has said before how he thinks the mouse and keyboard haven't really developed at all over the past 20 years and he thought that was disappointing. I can't see them doing a full in console but I can see them doing peripherals such as a new take on mouse and keyboard limitations.
