As mentioned online competitive or multi-player games with cheat detection could cause issue.

For just mod-ing your normal Steam library games then no as I do it all the time. Starfield being a good example which looks terrible without a re-shader applied.

I mod nearly every game I play, though these are mostly single player games. Unless it is online competitive games there should be no issues. Lots of multiplayer/coop games do allow mods, but needs all users to have the mods installed to play.

thanks guys very much, it was just single player games was worried that if i put a mod on game and it also had separate online part that i would forget to take it away, but i think i would stick with single player games only as not to make that mistake.

It very much depends on the game. And even then I highly doubt your steam account would get banned - just the associated accounts with the game.
i.e. mod/cheat in Rainbow Six Siege? You'd probably get banned on Ubisoft but not steam.
mod/cheat on CSGO, you'll get vac banned which will carry over to all your vac games.

Some multiplayer games are perfectly fine modded, e.g. Valheim, Satisfactory, Factorio, Project Zomboid, Borderlands, Anno 1800. Generally if it's a competative game, don't mod it. If it's not you should be fine but google is the best place to find answers.

I reckon it's unlikely you'd get banned on most multiplayer games, more than likely detect the mod and just disable the online features.

Nexus is pretty good, it's unlikely you'd download anything from that that would be up getting you banned.
