Are we in danger?

Because he was a British citizen assasinated on British soil and the radiation is spreading (possibly)?
Hmm i suppose.
What i'm saying is a) The russians have a habit of assassinating anyone they don't like and b) Where most countries would use a gun, the Russians tend to use more exotic methods such as radiation or microwaves or something.

i'd of thought if it was a russian assassination and our services were fully aware then they wouldnt of allowed such a public investigation
but saying that i dont think there's anything more sinister afoot, someone poisoned him and probably (or so it's now suggested) someone he met that day, however he's an ex spy, i'm sure there's a whole group of people who arent on his xmas list
it sounds like the basis for the most wonderfully elaborate cover stories though, so i can see the conpiracy theorists having a field day with it

Reality. First it was eggs, then chicken, then BSE, now it's radioactive aeroplane seats. Come on press pull the other one, you simply don't scare us any more

Sure it wasn't chickens, then eggs then BSE? I can never remember which came first.

Isn't tobacco grown using polonium 210 ?

edit, kinda

wikipedia (my fountain of knowledge) said:
Polonium has been found in tobacco smoke from tobacco leaves grown with phosphate fertilizers

Why is it that as soon as the word 'radiation' is mentioned in the news everyone panics? They're not even sure that it's the radiation that killed him yet; it could well have been chemical poisoning from polonium that did it.

As has been said, the only way an alpha source can be dangerous is if it's ingested/inhaled. Also, only the source itself is radioactive; it doesn't 'leak' radiation into other things and cause them to become radioactive.

I know, it annoys me. This is alpha radiation right? Its in every house with a smoke alarm in the country, so most houses.
Makes no difference if its weak or strong, it can't harm you unless you get seriously close to it.

And i think its impossible to make an effective dirty bomb out of alpha because it wouldn't work at all. Although i suppose it would work, because its primary purpose is to create panic and all you need to do that is the discovery of radiation, no matter how harmless.

This reminds me of how the Russians once rigged up a powerful microwave transmitter on a lampost outside the American embassy in Russia and slowly fried the brains of the people that worked there. Classic Russian style, America likes to flatten their enemies, Russia likes to slowly roast their enemies or poison them.

Polonium 210 -IS- the isotope, that's what the 210 means.

Yes, thank you, I know that.

I was responding to a comment about Polonium being found in tobacco smoke. My point is - meh, big deal - you could find all the Polonium you wanted, but unless it's 210 (or some other radioactive isotope) it's really not going to be much of a problem.

NO, it's usual scaremongering. The radiation is very week and can only travel a few centimetres, the skin will protect you, it needs to be inhaled or ingested at reasonably high levels. there's is a miniminiminiscle risk to public health. However company's like BA are protecting themselves against any passable liable action and saying seek medical help.

The trouble is that any moron with a stomachache who's flown BA in the past month will now go to the doctor complaining of radiation poisoning... It's easier for BA to look into it seriously and act like they're doing something, than to deal with all the fallout.

HAHA!
