Well, just over 2 weeks after buying the thing new, the dvd drive has stoppped reading discs.

The one thing that was putting me off the 360 was reliability. Am wishing I had gotten a flippin PS3 now.

If it's only two weeks in then just take it back to the retailer you got it from. Don't listen to any of that "you have to send it to Microsoft" crap either as the retailer is responsible for repair or replacement.

you are a bit unlucky mate, to get a new machine that develops a drive error. the shop should swap it though.

is it a falcon based 360? (175w psu)

I took my 360 back to the big highstreet store I bought it from when it screwed up after 6 months. Showed them my receipt - they didn't even test it, just took it off my hands and gave me a new one, so you shouldn't have any probs if it's only been 2 weeks. Get another mate it will just have been bad luck!

Got it replaced today. Very nearly got a PS3, but just didn't want to spend another £115 making the swap.

Question though - are the 360 controllers that come with the console itself actually tied to that console? Its just that one of the controllers does not want to connect now. I purchased a second controller and may have given that one back.

I just can't believe that a controller would be tied to a specific console, but if thats not the case, then there is something else wrong with this box. If there is something wrong with this one, then I am definitely getting a PS3 tomorrow.

You have to sync them to the console, push the little circle next to mem slot 2 and the little circle on top of the pad, next to the charging slot

They're not tied to any single console. If you've already tried pressing the sync button on the console and the pad then it may be a faulty pad.

Should tell you on near the serial number on the back of the 360, it will say either 175w,203w or 230w(?) 175w being the falcon.
