Had my MBP since march, still running snow leopard.

I used to just make sure the sound was set to mute when I shut down so that I didn't get the booooong chime when I booted up the next time.

But something's changed lately, possibly with the last set of updates that got pushed out, and now no matter what I do with the sound before shutting down (muted, turned all way down, headphones in) it still bongs away when I next boot up.

Was trying not to use any kind of app to do this but might have to now, has anyone else seen this behaviour change on their machine?

Tried that soundprefpane thing, it turned the chime off. But them unmuted and removed the app and the chime is still gone lol, so something is messed up.

Will try a PRAM reset soon.
