Was on my way to work this morning, about 11:15am and get stuck behind some nonce who wont do more than 35 in an NSL, and i cant overtake due to the traffic coming other way.

I see a gap coming up so slow down a bit so i can take a little run up & minimise my time on the opposite side of the road as i dont really like overtaking but this guy was gonna make me late.

I get to the gap, stick it in 2nd & floor it, just as i'm pulling out i see something white fly up off of the other cars tyre followed closely by a bang from just to my left, i pull back in carry on, get to work and have a quick look around and notice that i have now got what looks like a crater on my windscreen about the size of a 5p coin surrounded by a load of other impact marks :(

I know the pic is naff but i cant get the camera to focus on it at night.

Can these be repaired (how much??) or am i looking at a new windscreen?

^^^ as above, you should have a windscreen excess (mine is £60) on your insurance. If you're not too bothered about it, its not an MOT failure.

You could get a temp repair for about £20 where they fill the hole up and try to heat the glass to minimise any more cracking, as westy said it's not an MOT fail where it is. Suppose it's upto you if you want to have a perfect screen or not (the repairs I've seen are always better than before, but still visiable)

Or go through your insurance company if you have windscreen replacement, mines free without any excess but it depends policy to policy. New screen without going via insurance is probibly about £160 fitted if it's not a heated screen.

Repair will be free if you have windscreen insurance cover, my excess for a replacment has gone to £60 this year, won't effect your no claims and worth getting a new one imho.

i hate the gritter trucks on icy days... go anywhere near and you get showered in sediment!

If you have more than 2 chips they won't repair it, if you have any 1 chip in excess of the size of a 5p coin they won't repair it. Trust me I have had 4 screens in the last year due to stone chip damage from other vehicles.

I'd usually say it's better to pay the £50 and get a nice new sparkly clear screen but when you have had one every 3 months it's not so good :)

For a small chip I'd much rather have my OEM windscreen repaired than have some guy make a mess of fitting a new one.

Autoglass should repair at no cost to you, assuming you're fully comp. I didn't even have to pay my windscreen excess.
