Argh! USB not working!

Hello :)

I set up my new system yesterday, Win 7 Ultimate (genuine copy). Everything was running smoothly, no problems at all. Got all my major bits installed fine, drivers etc. However, my External Hard Drive was not being detected. It picks up fine on my laptop however, so thought this might be an issue with Win 7. (Its a Freecom 400gig, nothing special but its got important stuff on it).

I turned the PC off and disconnected the power, turned everything back on again so it would re-detect USb and hopefully pick it up. However, now no USB devices work in Windows. My Bios is still fine but as soon as it gets to Win 7 login, the lights black out on my mouse and keyboard.

I have reset the CMOS (On restart it asked me to continue or 'setup' so I chose continue and went into the BIOS) so I know this cleared it. The date had been put back a couple of months so I updated this and went into Windows. Same problem, lights black out on my devices and now its saying my 'Activation Period has expired' (Presumably because I jumped a couple of months in the Bios)

What should I do? Will a reinstall of Win 7 work?

Thanks for help in advance.

I have just reinstalled Windows and will report back to see if I have the same problem again with my External HDD.

Sadly, still getting the same issue. Just does not want to detect the Ext. HDD, saying that the device has malfunctioned (As previously stated, it works fine on my laptop). I am not going to be unplugging everything again as that caused a right ballache last time!

did you remember to install the motherboard drivers? I don't know if that would make USBs stop working, but I can tell you from experience that it stops you from connecting to the internet (it was a major facepalm moment when i figured that one out)

-Check motherboard BIOS updates to see if any of them reference USB issues
-Try another cable

Is it a powered drive? Does it use a power brick...

Or does it take its power from the Usb port..

If it's an amd chipset then their usb filter drivers sometimes cause the ports to flip out etc.

Install the chipset drivers without the filter driver works fine.
