I've set up Outlook express EXACTLY as specified in the instructions on Gmail, and it fails on sending a test email when I test the settings. Logs in fine, but won't send anything.

What am I doing wrong??? I've done everything to the letter. I've even gone back and deleted/re-done it to make sure I was doing it right.

I desperately need this to work :(

Ah, most ISPs require that you use their outgoing mail server. Example on my Wanadoo I have pop.yahoo.com as the incoming, but the outgoing must be smtp.wanadoo.co.uk

Find out what your ISP's outgoing mail server is and plumb that in instead and it will probably fix the problem.

Wanadon't are the only ISP I know that redirect all SMTP traffic (irrespective of destination) to their relay boxes.

Can you receive emails, Lostkat?

Gmail pop is enabled.

I can receive emails, but can't send them.

Have tried switching the outgoing server to my isp one, and I still get the error message.

It completes on everything except test email when I test the account settings.

This is the error I'm getting:

My email address is set up correctly as specified in the gmail instructions. I've gone over it all again this morning, and I can't see what's wrong with it.

What settings have you got under 'More Settings?' I know you said you set it up as Gmail say, but the only thing I can think of is that either the security settings or port number settings are wrong.

What ISP do you use?

you're not supposed to have the @gmail.com in the username box. it should be like this....

:)
When I set it up as per the gmail instructions, it told me that it needed the @gmail.com in the username box. I've already tried it without, just in case that was the problem. Test mail still fails either way.

These are my other settings - all as per instructions.

My ISP is globalwave, a small, local ISP which no one has ever heard of. Going from what they told me once about their firewall, it's actually just a bt server.

Under 'Internet Email Settings'/ 'Outgoing Server' have you got the 'Use same settings as my incoming server' ticked?

The In Gmail its self have you enabled POP Mail?
Settings, Forwarding and POP. Whats it say by POP Download? Mine says...'1. Status: POP is enabled for all mail that has arrived since 23/12/04'

How you getting on with this?

Try this:

Within the account properties click More Settings > Select the Outgoing Server Tab > Tick My Outgoing Server (SMTP) requires authentication > Click Ok.

Failing that I'd make sure there isn't any outbound firewall rules in place...

Thanks for the help so far guys. Still not working :(

Have had this set from the start:

I've messed around and tried various options, including using my isp email address for outgoing mail, but it still won't send a test email.

Just to reiterate, I can receive email perfectly fine.

Gmail POP is activated too

Bellboy - Instructions on Gmail say it's gmail, not googlemail. Surely if it was googlemail, it wouldn't be able to complete any of the tests?

Going to send an email to my tech support, as the only thing I can think of is that it's being prevented by a firewall.

All sorted. Had a reply from my ISP today saying that all outgoing email had to be done with their smtp address and not Gmail's. Not sure why it didn't work the first time I tried this option, but it does now. All is well :)

Thanks for everyone's help. Very much appreciated :)
