Argos - book of dreams.

Didn't know they were around in the 70s!

We had a huge Argos in Romford, Essex.
When it first opened I thought it was amazing.
The ability to queue up twice, before self scanning, to buy something was such a concept... Lol. When it was busy it would take 30 mins to get your order.

Lingerie section of Kay's catalog was good also.

There just isn't that Christmas spirit anymore, the markets are flooded with goods.

Thanks, i'll waste some time on this site!

Now all i need is a digitised version of the HIFI yearbook that existed from the early 70's.

The 1975/76 one has an avocado dish in it. What mid 1970s working class family knew what an avocado was, let alone that there was a dish to make eating them easier?

Wasn't Avocado a standard colour for a lot of porcelain back in the day?

Those golden mini-carriage clocks are a blast from the past. Something simultaneously so utterly naff, yet apparently so aspirational (judging from them being featured on the cover of at least two early catalogues).

We had an Index shop near us at that time. I think Argos eventually bought them out.

Index was owned by Littlewoods. I remember the larger Littlewoods having an Index inside or attached. Argos bought some of the old Index stores when Littlewoods closed them down and sold them off IIRC.
