My advice, do better in the future and let these things go.
 
I cant actually say what I want too here, but lets just say I wouldn't have been as polite, and he would have turned it down, whether he thought it unfair or not.

Agreed but everyone has different standards of politeness and many people really don't seem to realise when they're being inconsiderate and having a negative effect on those around them. I'm probably overly conscious of those around me and I do find myself expecting others to be just as considerate but I try to remind myself that that's not always a reasonable expectation.
 
The OP's approach was confrontational and now he complains that the ensuing argument annoyed him, OP sentenced to be socially re-educated.
 
Shouldn't have said a thing, merely snatched the phone from his hand and lobbed it down the carriage or out of the window

You should have been polite then if the music wasn’t turned down appropriate action such as saying “hey blud, phone goes out the window if you don’t turn it down m8”. Appropriate action after that would be a headbutt.

Antagonist in question should never have been playing his music from his phone in the first place.

If he doesn't realise it will annoy others he's either thick or outright lying. If it's the latter, you were going to have an argument regardless.

Hopefully he'll think twice next time.

As for the OP, I don't think you did anything wrong per se, but you could have at least taken some ammo away from him by using a few pleases and thank yous first.

e.g.

"Excuse me."

"What bruv?"

"Is that your phone?"

"Yeah bruv, what of it?"

"Would you mind turning it off or put some headphones in please?"

At this point he'll either argue anyway, or accept your reasonable request. But how dare you infringe on anyone else's right to be a nobber.

My money would have been on:

"You're the only one it's annoying. Brap."

and so it goes.
