Fancy getting this game tonight but a little worried about being left behind in the MP side. So:

1. Is it easy to learn and pickup?
2. Any good servers you can recommend?
3. How are the bugs i heard about at release?
4. Does not having an instruction book effect the ability to play? e.g. i'm buying a DL copy
5. Do i need to play through the SP to understand the MP side of the game?

1. Is it easy to learn and pickup?
Its not COD4 but its not rocket science. The playing style is what most people struggle with.. you often get shot at from unknown locations.. strategic awareness is something a lot of players lack.

2. Any good servers you can recommend?
There is an OcUK one and we play most nights. We have taken to doing regular missions, but you need to get on our Vent server too. We can answer any questions you have too. www.ocuk-arma2.co.uk

3. How are the bugs i heard about at release?
There are bugs, but no showstoppers. Depends on your hardware and OS as to how many you will encounter. Safest is a C2D, XP, Single GPU.

4. Does not having an instruction book effect the ability to play? e.g. i'm buying a DL copy
A week of playing will remove the need for the book. So no.

5. Do i need to play through the SP to understand the MP side of the game?
Not all of it, but if you havnt played any OFP games before you may be best off playing some SP to get the feel before jumping online. That said, I've played barely 30 minutes offline and many hours on.

1 - Depends on your level of experience... Not particularly easy to pick up if you've never played any of the previous games I'd imagine, but not impossible.
2 - The OcUK one. :)
3 - Never encountered a bug yet personally.
4 - Nope, best just to get stuck in to the tutorials and SP missions.
5 - No, but it'll help a fair bit.

It's certainly got a learning curve. I've only tried the demo, which I suggest you do before you buy it ;) I've heard a lot of the release bug have been sorted out.

I had had a few beers, but on my first shot I was scratching my head and stuck, my "mission" was to pick up a gun out of a box. I got over that hurdle and chewed through the rest, till I had to fly the choppers. That was grim. It's certainly more involved than most games, if "game" is the right word, I think simulator is closer to it. With some patience and friendly people to play with, I'm sure it could be amazing.

EDIT: I should add that I never had any bugs in the demo. Can I blame my poopy helichopter skills on a bug?

glad to hear that you havent encountered any bugs on some of the reviews they said it was unplayable might end up purchasing this now

Should have mentioned i played OFP to death, it was the reason i blagged the family to buy a new PC when i went to Uni, ofc i told them it was for word and excel ;)

I will try the demo tonight and if i like i will grab the digital download overnight :)

Thanks all i hope to see you on the OCUK server, i do have a mic as well

There's a couple of things it's probably good to know on the ocuk server for any noob. Firstly the settings are such that you don't get a red prompt when Seeing enemy. This makes friendly fire a real concern. So before you shoot press spacebar and it will tell you if the figure in your sights is friendly or not. If it comes up with a red name let them have it.
Don't fly the helicopters. There's people who know what they're doing using them for transport and wreck recovery. You can too once you get the hang of things.
When you first spawn look for a flagpole and click on it. If an mhq has been set up it will take you closer to the action. You will usually have a choice of two. Select the one that is closest to the red area. The mhq is an armored carrier. Once you spawn by it don't drive it unless you want to be kicked. Get one of them blown up and it's a pain to get a new one back there. Not that you will need to worry about that as you'll be gone.
When you start up open your map. You should be able to see where everyone is. If not, open your menu (middle mouse for me) select status, settings, show friendlies. If still not working goto ammo box and get a gps.
You can acess the ammo box to change your load out. You'll be allocated a role when you join the server - if your a medic or engineer change it by selecting something else unless you're actually willing to perform those roles.
Get on the ventrillo server. You'll be able to get help and hear what's going on.
Remember the server is run for the maximum fun of everyone - which means teamplay taken seriously. Dick around, shoot at friendlies deliberately ( just say sorry for tk's when accident), crash vehicles or break server rules and you'll be kicked if lucky. It's a good place for noobs to learn to get the max out of the game and if you've got a bit of common sense you'll be addicted in no time.

great info, had a blast on the OCUK clan server last night, the covoy ambush had me in hysterics.

HA! That was amazing..

Helicopter coming in..

Paradrop..

Oh.. whats this..

PARACHUTTESS EVEREYWHERE!!!1111

So i played the demo last night and its pretty much identical to FP but i had one problem with the textures not loading properly or unloading at points. Does anyone know what causes this problem and how to solve it? Is it patched to remove?

do you have more than 4gb of ram, as this game doesnt like any more than that, If so on the exe command line add " -maxmem=2047" withouth the quotations.

I really need to get back on the server, I had a couple of games, but then I downloaded BF1943 on the Xbox and been addicted to that ever since

Okay now half the textures load and the other half dont. Really annoying lol. Will either find a fix or just remove 2 sticks and use them only when i need to

What is your texture memory set to in the options? I find if it's on default I get the thing with load of untextured objects / buildings, very high works for me (4GB) -- would have a play around, maybe check the tweaking thread.
