Hi all,

First thanks for clicking to read and maybe help!

My friends spec is below

Corsair 8GB DDR3 1600MHz XMS3- CL9 1.5V
Gigabyte GA-970A-DS3P Socket AM3+ 7.1 Channel Audio ATX Motherboard
WD 1TB Blue Desktop Drive 3.5" SATA-III 7200RPM 64MB
EVGA 500W Fully Wired 80+ White Power Supply
amd fx 4100 quadcore oc'ed to 3.6ghz
radeon xfx 7700 ghost edition 2gb

He is looking to upgrade maybe £150 - £200 and we play Arma 3

Where would his money be best spent please?

Thanks

Arma 3 is quite CPU intensive, so I'd recommend getting something like an FX 6300 or FX 8320E (not standard 8320) CPU to put into your system (BIOS update first!)

Would you also be able to look at a used graphics card? I'd imagine for about £100 you can pick up a GTX 670 which would give you decent games also, but primarily I'd look at CPU (e.g. I was running A2 on medium on a 4670k integrated graphics at playable frames!)

So something like
YOUR BASKET
1 x AMD Piledriver FX-8 Eight Core 8320E Black Edition 3.20GHz (Socket AM3+) Processor - Retail £109.99
Total : £118.69 (includes shipping : £7.25).

+ ~£90 should net you a nice powerful enough GPU + CPU combo

AMD are terrible for Arma, always have been.

Grab a 2nd hand 2500k or similar off the MM (2005 member so i assume you have access)

I think that's due to multi-core optimisation, Intel are stronger single core of course, however you can set Arma to use all of your cores using the parameters in this; http://www.battleguns.net/forum/pag...d/6153624-arma-3-cpu-optimization-low-fps-fix

Which are supposed to help a lot with the six/eight core AMD CPUs
May well be wrong though :)

It's just Arma is really badly done, Ive had an [email protected] and it got a good 20fps less than a stock 2600k I had with the same gpu.

AMD cpus are really bad for Arma.Swapping out to any other FX cpu will not produce a massive difference

The only way to get a decent performance bump is to get An intel CPU.

A 4690k + z97 board is the best possible upgrade really. Would end up around the £250 mark tho

Cheers all for the input,

ive told him to sort an intel rig if he wants better performance along with a new gfx card after

cheers
if hes got a 7770 card it wont cut the mustard either (i had one running dayz @100% gpu usage, upgraded to a 270x, gpu down to 50%ish, on a fx6100)

as arma basically needs single thread performance he may be able to get away with a lowly pentium k, he can always upgrade later

cheapest new i can find at moment on OC

YOUR BASKET
1 x Powercolor Radeon R9 270 TurboDUO 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £113.99
1 x Gigabyte Z97-HD3 Intel Z97 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard £83.99
1 x Intel Pentium K Anniversary G3258 Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail £59.99

if he can get a s/h graphics card he may come in around his budget (or perhaps his friends can loan him a better gpu?)
