ArmA II - Setting up a dedicated server?

Hi.

Me and two friends are thinking of setting up an ArmA II server for us to use when we play together as there is a little lag when someone hosts on their PC. We have a 24MB connection we can use but we don’t have a decent server spare so would just be using a standard tower PC at the moment. Something along the lines of an Intel Core 2 @ 2.0Ghz with 2GB of Ram.

My questions would be does anyone have any experience setting up a dedicated server? Would there be a noticeable improvement if the 3 of us connect to a dedicated server from our homes onto that server which is connected on a 24MB connection? Or will the speed of that PC not be up to scratch? We would only want 3 or 4 human players so I guess it’s only the AI it’s going to be having problems with?

What does everyone think? Anyone have any similar ideas or tried it? :)

Yeah I have set-up several arma1 dedicated servers
and also have done 3 arma2 dedicated servers

You will need a decent quad core to run it well tho

L33 will have a decent idea. He runs the OcUK ARMAII server, which is now the 8th most popular ARMAII server.

Ram will be fine, the server doesn't seem to use very much (we peak at about 600mb with 40 players connected and ai-intensive missions) the biggest issues are CPU and bandwidth but it is all dependant on which missions you run, some are AI heavy and then there are PVP missions which usually do not have any. For AI (coop) missions I'd recommend at least an absolute minimum of 512kb upstream bandwidth for each connected player for smooth playing (24mb will be your download speed, upload will be a fraction of this). Ideally a quad core CPU is needed but if it is just for a few players to mess around you may get away with it :)

wouldnt it be great to have distributed computing in games like this, each player computes so many AI. Amongst overclocking communities with good connections we could have massive battles =p
